Situated at the west end of Sao Miguel, the parish of Sete Cidades lies inside a caldera 5 km in diameter. It contains two lagoons, Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul.
At the top of the Fogo Volcano is the second largest lagoon of Sao Miguel, Lagoa de Fogo. Within the entire perimeter of the natural reserve - lagoon, caldera, its slopes, what stand out are species of plants unique to the Azores. Unfortunately, no one is permitted to swim, paddle, or get in the water. They are very strict about this.
Located in a lovely cove, Agua d'Alto beach is considered one of the best beaches on the island of Sao Miguel. The beach's main attributes are its big stretch of sand and clean, calm waters. It is located in the parish of Agua d'Alto, in the municipality of Vila Franca do Campo.
The Furnas valley, in the municipality of Povocao, with its calderas and fumaroles, the stew cooked in the heat of the volcanic soil, the thermal baths of the Furnas Boutique Hotel, the hot water baths and mud of the Poca da Dona Beija, the luxuriant garden of the Terra Nostra Park and the charming Lagoa das Furnas, bordered by the Jose do Canto Woodland-Garden and the Chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitorias, is undoubtedly the island's promotional poster.
The beach of Santa Barbara, located in the parish of Ribeira Seca, in the municipality of Riberia Grande is one of the most extensive beaches in the Azores with a kilometre in length. It is well known internationally for its world class waves that hold annual surfing and bodyboarding competitions, due to the north quadrant wave that provides spectacular moments in the water. It has a recreation area, bar/restaurant, spas and showers, a surf school and a luxury resort, the Santa Barbara Eco Beach Resort.
Located in the parish of Ginetes, municipality of Ponta Delgada, Ferraria has a thermal bathing area with springs of therapeutic waters of volcanic origin which have been acknowledged since the 16th century. You can also go to the thermal spa.
Considered one of the most beautiful beaches of Sao Miguel, this is located in a cove with clear water in the hamlet of Caloura, in Agua de Pau, municipality of Lagoa, next to the fishing port. It is even surrounded by a landscape of vineyards protected by black stone walls. While there isn’t sandy beach access, there is an ocean water filled swimming pool and a quaint little harbor.
The 16th century chapel, with erudite architecture, features an altar covered with azulejo tilework with a curious rock image of its patron saint. At Rua Dr. Leonardo de Morais Motta, in the parish of Remedios, Lagoa.
A large workshop and collection of earthenware produced in the old ceramic factories of Lagoa. In Lagoa, there were small potteries similar to those on the island of Santa Maria and those in Vila Franca do Campo. This was even before the founding of the first glazed ware factory, created by Bernardino da Silva in 1862, in Porto dos Carneiros, Lagoa. This factory, Ceramica Vieira, is one of the few industries to have lasted for 5 generations. Its production and decoration remains artisanal and semi-artisanal. The simple designs are applied with stencils. They are commonly known as Lagoa China. Ceramica Vierira is at Rua das Alminhas 12, Rosario, Lagoa.
