Montserrat is one of our favorite day trips from Barcelona since it isn't very far from the city center (1 hour by car or 1.5 hrs by public transport). If you're brave, you can even take the cable car which goes up the 1,350 meter climb in 5 minutes! If you're feeling adventurous, you can also hike from the foot to the top in about 3 hours. Whether you're there to see the monastery or the views, it's an incredible experience.
If you're looking for a medeival city in Catalunya, Girona will be a great day trip only 1 hour away by car or 45 min by train. You can explore the city, enjoy the nature in the nearby mountains, or see the cathedral where Game of Thrones was filmed!
Catalunya's Costa Brava has some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe where locals and tourists alike enjoy summer days (and weeks). You can reach the nearest beach in Costa Brava (Blanes) in about 1 hour, but feel free to drive up the coast until France! Some of the best known beaches and towns are: Blanes, Begur, Tossa de Mar, Llafranc, Sa Riera, Roses, El Port de la Selva, Cadaqués, and Figueres (where the Salvador Dalí house and museum are!) We really recommend getting a car for this, but there are trains if you want
Did you know that Catalunya alone has 11 wine regions? A lot of people are familiar with Spain's Rioja region, but while you're here there are some Catalan wineregions to try: - Penedès: (about 1 hour with car or train) This is the wine region in Catalunya where Cava (Catalan sparkling wine) comes from. Also, an emerging type of Cava is called Corpinnat which is of higher quality that you can check out in Penedès. - Priorat: (2 hours by car) Priorat is one of the best wine regions in Spain and 1 of only 2 DOQs (regions of exceptional quality) in Spain (the other is Rioja).
