The Garden Deli Cafe was a major hangout for Vicky on beach-day weekends in high school -- the homemade sandwich bread is top-notch! The cantina in the back is a great dinner spot, too.
Try the s'mores cookie -- salty graham cracker cookie under melted chocolate and a perfectly browned marshmallow!
A lovely hike out to the dunes and the elephant seals! In August, you won't need to take a docent tour -- instead, go check in at the little museum/station/shop and have a gander at the exhibits on the wild lives of sea behemoths, and then take yourself on a walk and enjoy the beasts themselves.
Vicky's favorite tidepooling spot, a dog-friendly beach, and the closest you can get on shore to the location of the famous big-wave Mavericks surf break. The area nearby has some really nice restaurants, Mavericks Surf Shop, and a brewery.
Not *the* Methuselah tree (famous for being possibly the oldest tree alive, that one's a bristlecone pine in SoCal) but *a* Methuselah tree, ours is an absolutely gigantic coast redwood nearly 2,000 years of age. It's visible from the parking area, so it's not a long walk, but anyone looking for more walk will find plenty of trails in nearby Corte Madera and Purisima preserves.
A Half Moon Bay classic -- if you want to experience California seafood, this is the spot! Famous (obviously) for their chowder, they also have good burgers and non-fishy things. And the view is unbeatable.
David adores this museum in the heart of Silicon Valley for their extensive collection of computational artifacts!
There's a hostel and (legend tells) a secret hot tub here, but also a fantastic Fresnel lens and a fabulous lookout point over the Pacific.
Pie Ranch is a great roadside stop for snacks and produce -- their claim to fame is that they grow everything on the ranch that you might need to make a pie! Reconnecting students (and adults) to the way food is grown and to the coast lands themselves through partnerships with schools, the Amah Mutsun people, ecologists and conservationists, and farmers, the ranch is working its way through wildfire recovery while making the most of their slice of California.
