Flight

Merida International Airport (MID)

We recommend flying into Merida International Airport aka Aeropuerto Internacional Manuel Crescencio Rejón. This airport is around a 20 minute drive from the city center. Depending on the day you fly in, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Orlando, and Miami offer direct flights to Merida. IMPORTANT NOTE: Ride-share apps are NOT permitted to pick up passengers from this airport. You must schedule transportation. If desired, please reach out to our travel concierge to help arrange transportation at travelconcierge@yucatalove.com or via the QR code located at the top of the page! For those that arrive in Merida and realize you forgot to schedule transportation (something Jim would do), there are taxis at the airport and Uber/Lyft is accessible outside of the airport limits. We found this out the first time we visited Merida, as our Uber driver told us that we had to walk through the airport parking lot and across the street in order for him to pick us up. So Uber is possible from the airport, you will just need to lug your bags across the street, which we don't recommend due to inconvenience. As for the flight out of Merida back to the U.S., make sure you arrive to the airport a little earlier than normal because you will need to go through Customs at the last stop before you get to your gate (after you get through security). There will be a line of people on the left side of the hallway that leads to the gates. Make sure to get in that line so you can get your passport stamped. The airline personnel will check for that stamp when you try to get on the plane. Build in an extra 15-20 minutes in case there is a long Customs line as you head out of town.

Transportation

Merida is an extremely walkable city and we recommend walking to destinations as much as possible. For destinations that are a little too far, we had no problems using Uber during our time in Merida. They were quick, safe, and inexpensive, costing $2-4 USD per trip. We recommend using Uber or other rideshare platforms such as Indriver, DiDi and Cabify. Please contact our Travel Concierge via QR code located at the top of this page to schedule any private transfers (ie. from the airport to your hotel/airbnb). Of note, Ubers and rideshare platforms are prohibited from picking up at the Merida International Airport. You must arrange for a Taxi or private transfer upon arrival in Merida. More info on this to come!

Train

Tren Maya

The Mayan Train (Maya Train, Tren Maya, Tsíimin-K’áak or Fire Horse) is a new railway transportation service that connects 5 states in the southeastern region of Mexico, with 42 safe and modern trains. The Tren Maya ruta interconnects the main cities, tourist areas, attractions, and archaeological sites primarily related to the Maya culture. If you're interested in taking a daytrip to Izamal or Campeche, or want to round out your Mexican vacay with a trip to the Caribbean beaches of the Yucatan (ex. Cancun, Tulum), then this train might be the perfect option for you! We took the train from Cancun to Merida in June 2025 and had a great experience. The train station we departed from was still under construction which made boarding a little less organized, but overall the experience was a breeze. It took us around 3 hours to get to Merida!
