I originally met Tyler through Bumble. We exchanged a few messages and set up a time and place for our first date. But in the days leading up to it, I had a bad experience on another date and decided to delete the app entirely—leaving Tyler completely in the dark. A few days later, I was at work managing an apartment community in Newport Beach. It was a Saturday, and we were hosting a resident event in the courtyard and I was leaving early to head to my brother’s house to celebrate my nephew’s birthday. On my way out, I grabbed some dry cleaning from the office to deliver to a resident’s apartment. As I entered my building and walked past the elevator entrance, the elevator door opened. My coworker, one of our maintenance techs, stepped out and said, “Hi Bessa!” I turned to respond—and that’s when I locked eyes with a man still inside the elevator as the door began to close. He looked familiar, which was strange because I know pretty much everyone who lives in the building. But I couldn’t quite place him. Later that evening, I got a notification that someone named Tyler Weinrich had viewed my LinkedIn profile. As soon as I saw his face and full name, it all clicked. He was the man in the elevator. He was the guy from Bumble. He lived in my building. And not just anywhere—he lived two doors down from me! I immediately thought back to a moment months earlier when a resident was struggling with the package lockers. Since I work there, I offered to help. I asked for his apartment number and retrieved his package for him. I remember thinking it was odd that I didn’t recognize him, since I know who everyone is that resides there. Turns out, Tyler travels a lot for work, so I’d never had the chance to connect his name to a face—or to his apartment. Now, we love reminiscing about how all these little moments had to align perfectly for us to finally meet. We ended up going on that originally planned first date and have been together ever since. We came from opposite ends of the country—me from California, Tyler from New Jersey—and somehow ended up living just a few doors apart for nearly a year without knowing it.
