Airport Travel: Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

Guests coming from out of state can fly into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Once at the airport, there are numerous options to get to San Juan island.

Friday Harbor Seaplanes

If you aren't planning on staying in Seattle before making your way to Roche Harbor on San Juan Island, but you are wanting to experience travel by seaplane, then this could be right for you. Friday Harbor Seaplanes has a shuttle from Sea-Tac to their terminal on Lake Washington in Renton. You can choose to fly into Friday Harbor or directly to Roche Harbor if preferred.

Ferry Information

Roche Harbor Resort is on San Juan Island. To get there from Seattle requires some travel and planning, but is well worth it! The ferry departs from Anacortes, which is about a 1 hour and 45 min drive north from Seattle (leave yourself a buffer for traffic). From there you take a gorgeous 1 hour ferry ride into Friday Harbor. Once on San Juan Island, it is a 15 minute scenic drive to Roche Harbor. You MUST RESERVE your space on the Ferry! Reservations are released in 3 Tiers - April 23rd, 2019 is the first day you will be able to book the ferry, so mark your calendar! If you find it is all booked up when you go to schedule, additional space will be released 2 weeks and then again 2 days prior to sailing. San Juan is an incredibly popular destination and booking ASAP is highly recommended. Please go to the Washington State Ferry website link to book. Make sure you book both ways and make sure to arrive at least 45 min before your scheduled ferry departure.

Rental Car

Rental Car

Getting a rental car from Sea-Tac is always a great option. It gives you some flexibility for when you head to the island and what you want to do while in the PNW. If you aren't taking one of the other methods to the island (Sea Plane, Shuttle from the Airport, Clipper,etc), you can rent a car. The entire trip to Seattle and the San Juans can be done without a car, but we would suggest renting a car so you have the flexibility.

Link Light Rail

The light rail service from Sea-Tac to Seattle is very affordable (~$5 return) Should you want to spend a few days in Seattle and enjoy using a city's public transportation system. This is typically one of the quicker ways into Downtown, taking about 30-35 mins. Uber & Lyft are also available and run between $30-45 depending on traffic. Bellair Charters

Bellair Charters offers a shuttle bus from Sea-Tac airport to the Anacortes ferry terminal. From here you would walk on the ferry, and then take a short 15 min taxi ride, or shuttle to Roche Harbor. You may inquire with the hotel on the best way to get to Roche Harbor Resort depending on your arrival time into Friday Harbor. If you aren't planning on spending a day in Seattle, then this could be a great option to continue to see the beautiful PNW without the stress of driving or renting a car.

If you're planning on spending a day or two exploring in Seattle before the wedding, and not wanting to rent a car, it could be worthwhile to consider flying directly from Seattle to Roche Harbor by float plane! You can take a sea plane directly from South Lake Union in Seattle to Roche Harbor in under an hour...check it out if you want a quick, convenient, and fun option!

San Juan Clipper (Ferry)

Another great option to get to the island without a rental car is the San Juan Clipper. The clipper leaves from downtown Seattle by the waterfront at Pier 69. Skip the long drive from Seattle and ferry lines in Anacortes! Instead, walk on direct from downtown Seattle aboard our high-speed San Juan Clipper catamaran for a quick and easy ferry ride to Friday Harbor on San Juan Island. The easiest, fastest way to get from Seattle to the San Juans! You can include a whale watching tour on your ferry for an extra fee.

If you'd like to avoid the reservation system (easier option), you can park in Anacortes near the ferry and walk on. Walk ons do not require reservations. If you arrive in Friday Harbor (where the ferry arrives) without a car you can easily catch a shuttle that goes from Friday Harbor to Roche Harbor Resort.

San Juan Transit

There is a bus service between Friday Harbor and Roche Harbor. It actually will also take you around to other islands as well, including Orcas and Lopez. Friday Harbor and San Juan Island

There are plenty of lodging options at Friday Harbor or on San Juan Island itself. All guests should have a place to stay for the night of the wedding, as after the reception ends there are not any ferries back to the city. In addition to staying at the resort itself, there are some adorable bed and breakfasts, as well as Air BnBs and VRBOs on the island. Be extra cautious in booking as some searches yield results for the group of islands (San Juan Islands), but are not on the same island as the resort and would require additional water transportation to get to the wedding itself!
