Tess is Mariah’s younger sister (by 3 years, 4 months and 13 days they will have you know). Somewhere around college, Tess gracefully made the transition from annoying little sister to close friend and confidant. Tess was one of the rare four-year-olds who makes good on the promise to become a sea turtle marine biologist. Regarding other species, if you point to a bird on the street she definitely knows what it is and it’s possible she’s taught a class to some volunteers about it. Like most things Mariah does and Tess swears she’ll never do because they are too uncool, Tess is starting a PhD program in the fall to become the second Dr. DeSerisy in the family. She currently lives in Tallahassee, FL with her partner, Nick, and their giant dog, Milo, and tiny cat, Moose.

Laura and Mariah have been best friends since 2017. Early on, their friendship was fueled by Friday evening “date nights” usually involving wine and/or sushi and venting about grad school life. Since then, they have both graduated but continue to enjoy brunch, wine, sushi, and peer to peer supervision. Laura lives in New York City with her husband, Joseph, and daughter, Zoe. Laura is a clinical psychologist in private practice. Fun facts: Prior to pursuing her Ph.D., Laura was a professional ballerina (and studied dance at University of Cincinnati). Laura has lived in NYC for 20 years.

Nicole and Mariah go back to ninth grade health class where Mariah aspired to be as daring as Nicole, who sat in the back reading a book. Through years of a shared love of cooking, baking, and reading fantasy novels, Nicole remains an extension of the DeSerisy family, though now from afar. Nicole lives in Virginia with her husband, Josh, and son, Soren. She works for the US government facilitating Fulbright programming. Fun facts: Nicole speaks fluent (mostly) Japanese. When they were young (and Mariah was still mostly vegetarian), Nicole graciously prepared all of the meat for monthly “international dinners” wherein Mariah and Nicole picked a country and prepared a four course meal for their parents based on the country’s cuisine.

Amani and Mariah lived three rooms apart on McLean second freshman year of college. Mariah and Amani quickly developed a breakfast, biology, chemistry, calculus, library, dinner routine that was boring… but effective. Fifteen years (eek!) later they are the only ones from the “pre-med” hall that made it all the way through, and neither pursued an MD. Amani lives outside of Philadelphia with her husband, Dave. She is a clinical psychologist working in a hospital-based clinic. Fun facts: In college, Amani was doubly international - she is Canadian but went to high school in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Sam BarneySam Barney

Sam and Mariah bonded during residency when they were both assigned to the girls community at Boys Town during the middle of the pandemic. Other than their patients and supervisors, they were pretty much the only two people in the world they saw for approximately 6 months, which got…. weird, especially for the pets (mostly Sam’s cat Mousse, who is still on the fence about Midge). Sam has recently returned from an epic year of traveling (lovingly called her “Sambattical”) to her home in Vancouver, British Columbia. Definitely ask her about all the incredible places she visited! So cool! Sam is a psychologist working in private practice in Vancouver. Fun facts: Sam is secretly a DJ and hosts the BEST living room dance parties. Sam loves to paint and kept alive very many houseplants after moving them 1000 miles.

Harper is Trent’s niece. Since they met in 2021, Harper and Mariah have bonded over “Mariah pasta,” “slutty brownies,” terrible pizza and a shared love of hot chocolate and Polar Express on Christmas Eve. Harper lives in Omaha, NE with her parents (Trent’s brother and sister-in-law, Travis and Kirstin) where she is in the 10th grade. Fun facts: Harper is a fantastic tennis player and loves to read.

Anna is actually one of Trent’s best friends, but he is lending her to Mariah today. Anna and Trent met through mutual friends, again through the gym. Anna comes from an incredible family that Trent considers an extension of his own, and the two often talk on the phone while Anna is driving to work. No stranger to being a bridesmaid, Anna’s character is a reflection of the kind of person she is and Trent is delighted to have introduced to her Mariah. Anna lives in Madison, Wisconsin with her husband, Jordan, and daughter, Ellie.

Best Man
Travis is Trent’s older brother and best man. Travis lives in Omaha with his wife, Kirstin and their children, Campbell and Harper. Travis was an “only child” until the 7th grade when our parents announced he was getting a little brother. Surprise! Travis and Trent share their love of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, standup comedy, and long weekends at his cabin in the Ozarks.

Campbell is Trent’s nephew. He is a sophomore at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, double-majoring in Accounting and Finance. Much to Trent’s chagrin, Campbell was taller than him in 8 th grade. Trent and Campbell share a love for all things finance related, hip hop music, and sneakers.

Jason is one of Trent’s oldest friends. Jason and Trent grew up in the same neighborhood and attended elementary school through college at the University of Nebraska at Omaha where they were roommates. When their basketball careers stalled, they ended up on the Norfolk bowling team together. Although they haven’t lived in the same city in 10 years, they talk almost every day. Jason and his wife Jodi live in Indianapolis, Indiana with their two daughters.

Kolby and Trent met through mutual friends and a love for the gym when Trent was living in Omaha. Kolby grew up in a small town about a half hour from Trent’s childhood home in Nebraska. While Trent’s football career never really “took off”, Kolby played tight end of the University of Oklahoma. Kolby and Trent share a love of fancy steak restaurants and all things investing.

Jason and Trent also met through the gym when Trent was living in Omaha. Not that anyone looking would believe it by looking, but Jason and Trent were weightlifting partners for years. Jason is that one friend that gives good life advice for just about anything. Trent tries to repay that favor through teaching Jason about investing. He and his wife Mary Ann live in Omaha, Nebraska.

Kyle was selected to be a groomsman because Trent refused to be the shortest guy in the wedding. All jokes aside, Kyle and Trent met online during the Covid pandemic through an online stock trading community. Today Trent manages Kyle’s retirement money and Kyle mentors Trent in his journey to a CPA license. The two are running the Brooklyn Half Marathon together in April 2025. Kyle is a Certified Public Accountant and lives in Denver, Colorado with his two daughters.

John and Trent moved to NYC at about the same time and met shortly after at an underground comedy club. Together they’ve enjoyed true Italian gourmet in Little Italy in the Bronx, cocktails in the Village, and attended Mets and Nets games.

(In absentia) Cory is the other friend that Trent has known for over 30 years. Cory and his wife Abby live outside of Lincoln, Nebraska with their two children. Also growing up in the same childhood neighborhood, Trent and Cory bonded over their love of sports, video games, and the occasional adult beverage. Trent became an ordained minister and married Cory and Abby in 2023.
