Part of the joy of hosting our wedding on Upper Saranac Lake is in sharing the wonder of this place with those we hold most dear. As temperatures increasingly rise across our planet, local ecosystems are held in an ever more tenuous balance. Climate change has impacted the lake in both visible and invisible ways. Since 1903, Upper Saranac Lake has lost 3 weeks of ice cover each winter, with an overall increase in year-round average temperatures and temperature stratification. Higher stratification between warm and cold layers of the lake leads to decreased oxygen in colder layers, greatly harming fish populations. In addition, harmful algal blooms become more likely, which then threatens flooding and the safety of loon nests on the lake. The Upper Saranac Foundation is crucial to preserving this fragile ecosystem. As part of its aim to raise awareness of water quality issues, maintain climate data, and be a leader in environmental stewardship, the Foundation maintains the sole water quality monitoring platform within the Adirondack Park—collecting and sharing crucial environmental data across the region. More information about the Foundation’s work related to invasive species prevention, environmental monitoring and preservation of the Upper Saranac Lake environment, can be found by visiting: https://usfoundation.net/. As we celebrate our wedding in this incredible place, please consider making a donation in our honor to The Upper Saranac Foundation!

We are living through a time of mass racial reckoning—and there is a lot of work still to be done. Each and every person is called to be faithful for that which is uniquely ours to do. By organizing white people to participate in building a more just and equitable world, the work of Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ) is of critical importance in this time. Mobilizing hundreds of thousands of white people to fight for racial and economic justice, SURJ offers a better alternative to the well-worn pattern of strategic racism deployed to divide communities. By organizing white people to fight alongside people of color, SURJ advocates for “a just, vibrant future where people of all races work together to win what we need.” Through campaigns and over 200 local chapters, SURJ is building people power in multi-racial communities across the country. Guided by a vision for beloved community, we believe the work of SURJ is truly invaluable. Please join us in building a world of common flourishing by supporting Showing Up for Racial Justice!

In an ever-increasingly noisy world, space to practice the contemplative disciplines of silence, stillness, and solitude is invaluable. Even more poignant, though: the monks of the Society of St. John the Evangelist (SSJE) located in Cambridge, Massachusetts know a thing or two about abiding in Love—and then calling forth that belovedness from others. We are immensely grateful for the monastic wisdom and spiritual stability provided through SSJE. In addition to individual spiritual direction and retreats throughout our formation during seminary and beyond, the Brothers have also committed to walking alongside us in our preparation for marriage. The Brothers live under a Rule of Life and, at profession, make vows of poverty, celibacy and obedience. We invite you to join in supporting the invaluable gift they provide.
