Todd and Kelle met in March 2018 through their mutual friend, the Internet. Kelle wishes she could scare people by saying they met on Craigslist, but instead, she gets to scare people in a different way by saying they met on Tinder. But worry not—Todd and Kelle had more in common than a shared ability to swipe right on a phone screen. Luckily, Todd’s expressed appreciation for Weird Al Yankovic on the first date did not scare Kelle off. They quickly discovered their mutual appreciation for prestige television, Oscar-bait movies, satire news websites, absurdist gifs, and Kelle's adorable dog Cashew. They fell in love over the next couple of months and officially declared it so on Kelle's 28th birthday in June, when Todd played a demo recording of a song he had written for Kelle called "Fall in Love (Every Nite)". Kelle listened to the song intently, and then asked, "Who is the song about?", just to make sure. (It was about her.)
Over the next year, Todd and Kelle traveled to Minneapolis (the "Mini-Apple"), Williamsburg (the original one, not the hipster one), Watercolor (FL), Seattle, Nashville, College Station (Kelle’s favorite), and of course their hometowns of Dallas and Austin (Kelle’s actual favorites). They cherished spending time with each other's families (and family dogs). They developed tastes for specific types of road trip snacks: yes to Buc-ee's Blazin' BBQ Trail Mix, and an emphatic no—from Kelle, at least—to loose hard-boiled eggs in plastic wrap. Todd learned that Kelle has the enviable ability to fall asleep immediately upon sitting down in an airplane. Kelle learned that Todd is a skilled mini-golfer and a vocal critic of the "wave" at sporting events. Todd made sure they saw plenty of baseball games and rock shows. Kelle made sure they saw plenty of well-curated retail spaces, design-forward coffee shops, and boutiques with fancy/overpriced dog accoutrements.
While in Seattle in April 2019, Kelle and Todd visited a jewelry store and began designing the perfect engagement ring. With all their upcoming travel over that summer, Todd had to find the perfect time to surprise Kelle with the big question when she wasn’t expecting it. Todd had the perfect spot picked out (McGovern Centennial Gardens in Houston) and secretly invited friends and family to a post-question celebration at their favorite brunch spot (The Classic). The last piece was figuring out how to convince Kelle to wake up early on a Saturday morning and go somewhere outside in the middle of August (both Sisyphean tasks). The key turned out to be Todd’s habit for losing his sunglasses (having replaced multiple pairs since meeting Kelle). Todd had his nice pair of Ray-Bans “go missing” the week prior, then miraculously his buddy Cody had “found them” and was able to meet up at the museum near the park. However, not knowing about Todd’s plans for the day, Kelle had already scheduled a birthday party (pawty) for her dog, Cashew, later that afternoon, to which Cody had RSVP-ed “not attending”. So you can imagine Kelle’s indignation when she found out Cody was available to meet up that morning, but not available to attend Cashew’s birthday party. Regardless, Kelle bought Todd’s story, and the forecast for rain held off. When they got to a scenic hill in the gardens, there was no Cody—only their friend Eddie hiding in the bushes with his camera to capture the moment. Just as Kelle began to realize this visit wasn’t about the sunglasses, Todd asked Kelle to marry him. (She said yes.) Oh, and Todd’s sunglasses were in his car the whole time.
