Travel tips

For travelers from the United States, there are three main airports in Portugal-- Porto, Faro and Lisbon. The most common entry and exit point for visitors to the Algarve by airplane is Faro International Airport. Please note that flights from the United States and other transatlantic flights route through Lisbon. There are also flights via London’s Heathrow airport to Faro International. Faro International Airport is approximately 66 kilometers (41 miles) to Carvoeiro, Portugal which takes just under an hour by taxi or car. For information about local taxi service available at Faro Airport, please visit the airport website at https://www.aeroportofaro.pt under "Getting to and from the airport" and "Public transportation." According to TripAdvisor, Uber is very easy to catch from the airport and cost approximately $55 US. The airport also hosts a number of car rental companies, including Avis, Herz, Budget, and Enterprise. **Starting in January 2024 in addition to a valid passport, most travelers from outside of the EU will need to apply for ETIAS. What is ETIAS? ETIAS stands for the European Travel Information and Authorization System, a travel security program. Based on its American equivalent ETAS, ETIAS conducts background checks on applicants to identify potential security risks entering Europe’s external borders. The application is online and cost 7 euro per person. More information about this can be found in FAQ section
