This is our favorite local hike. It is a 3.7 mile round trip hike that gives you a great view of Boise and beyond. This is also a special place for Nicole and Thomas (and Denise) because they have enjoyed participating in the LIMBitless challenge that allows the adaptive community to do the hike with an adaptive wheelchair and a team. We recommend parking at the Old Penitentiary. It is dog friendly, Harley recommends as well. (Free)
The Idaho State Penitentiary opened its doors in 1872 to some of the West’s most desperate criminals. Today, visitors can experience over 100 years of Idaho’s unique prison history with a visit to Solitary Confinement, cell blocks, and the Gallows. (cost money)
The 25-mile Boise River Greenbelt is one of Boise's most beloved parks. The tree-lined pathway follows the river through the heart of the city and provides scenic views, wildlife habitat and pedestrian access to many of the city's popular riverside parks. We highly recommend stopping at the Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial along the way. (Free)
Freak Alley is a “notable venue” for murals, graffiti and public art located in an alley in downtown Boise. It is said to be the largest outdoor gallery in the Northwest, and has been a Boise institution since 2002. It began with a painting of a single alley doorway and now extends from the alley itself to gravel parking lot. (Free)
