How We Met

North Beach, SF

Andy's roommate and long time friend, Thomas and Sarah's new San Francisco friend, Taylor organized a dinner with a group of friends at Chubby Noodle North Beach. Sarah was late (classic) and Andy left with chicken fingers in his shirt pocket but something special was happened over the szechuan green beans, sake bombs and loud R&B music playing that night. After dinner, they made their way to a white party at Hawthorne because Andy had a friend DJing. They spent the whole night together, enjoying some drinks, dancing, getting their faces painted (if you know you Andy and his Delaware friends - you know the special place in their heart that the face paint lady holds) and parted ways at the end of the night but not before exchanging numbers. While they didn't end up going on their first date for ~3 months they kept in touch via texting, snapchat, and mutual friends until then (Sarah had now moved in with a mutual friend Meggy).

Our First Date

Russian Hill, SF

Sarah got a new job working with both Thomas & Taylor (see: How We Met) at Google, Andy's Tahoe ski lease was over and the timing was finally right for their first date! They decided to keep it casual - a drink or two at House Rules on Polk - so casual in fact that Andy planned to go the gym after and dropped his work bag and gym clothes at the gym down the block before meeting Sarah. The Golden State Warriors were in the NBA playoffs at the time and Andy and Sarah were sat right in front of the TV so on top of first date nerves, a large group of people were staring their direction only making Sarah's nerves worse. She easily talked about ~80% of the date and the two of them were in the pub until 11 pm when they realized it was a weeknight and both had work in the morning. Safe to say, the gym was closed at that point. Shortly after the first date, Andy asked Sarah on a dinner date to Waterbar, then another date, and another, and the rest was history!

The Proposal

The Financial District, SF

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, Sarah and Andy made the decision to leave their junior one bedroom apartment in San Francisco with the "to-die-for" view of Bay Bridge for greener (and larger) pastures up in Washington. To celebrate their 5 year dating anniversary they decided to take a trip back to the city they fell in love, San Francisco. Sarah is terrible with ruining surprises so to avoid any suspicion of his big plan, Andy let Sarah take the reins and book their flights, hotel, and dinner reservations but it didn't keep Sarah from pressure testing his plans with lots of "Is there ANYTHING else you really want to do while we are there?" type questions. The last night there (May 8, 2021), they went to their second date night spot and one of their favorite restaurants in SF, Waterbar and we're planning on meeting Taylor and her husband Mike after for a drink. Dinner was delicious but when it came time for desert, Andy rushed Sarah out of the restaurant to go meet their friends and surprisingly she didn't think anything of it. Holding hands walking along Embarcadero with Sarah's favorite view of SF behind her, Andy started walking faster, then slower, then turned her around to go meet the friends at a different restaurant only to finally get her away from other people and under a light so the diamond sparkled just right to pop the question. Andy dropped to one knee and asked Sarah to marry him. Not holding back any tears at this point, Sarah said "Yes!" After hugging and crying for a few minutes, Andy finally asked, "So do you want to try on the ring?" In the excitement of it all, they forgot that detail. It was the most special moment just the two of them but Andy had another surprise up his sleeve. After soaking it all up, they walked over to Angler for drink with Taylor and her husband Mike but to Sarah's surprise there was a whole group of friends waiting with champagne to celebrate! It was the most unforgettable night.
