Travel

Let's be honest, Folegandros is not the easiest to get to. Thank you for deciding to make the trip and we are so excited to have you there! Here are a few travel tips. You can fly to Athens or Mykonos or Santorini and you would then need to get a ferry to Folegandros. Santorini makes the shortest ferry ride to the island.

Travel Note

Ferry Information

There are two types of ferries, the slower (and cheaper) and the faster (and more expensive). The complete timetable of the ferry routes might not be finalised until late in spring so do not rush to book your ferry tickets (the prices don't change). If you are going for the fast ferry, probably safer to book the tickets a few weeks in advance. If you are opting for the slow ferry, you could even book them a few days before. You can get the tickets on Ferryhopper, Ferryscanner and DirectFerries. Prices should be the same on all of them. Ferries typically reach Folegandros a couple of times a day. It can be an "experience" getting into the ferry (think organised chaos, but with less organisation, more chaos and more old Greek ladies elbowing you to get a better position for their bag in the hold storage...) and and it can take time if the port is busy, so make sure to arrive early and allow time between the time you land and the estimated ferry departure. P.S. Winds can sometimes be strong in the area so if you get sea sick easily, probably best to opt for the shortest ferry ride.

Getting Around

The island is small and distances are fairly short. For instance, it only takes about 5-10 minutes to drive from the port to Chora (although the walk is probably more like 45 minutes - and in the heat of the day, that can be a long 45 minutes). Depending on where you choose to stay and how much you plan to move around, you may not need to hire a car (we didn't last time we were here). There is a local bus that covers the key routes. Hiring a car is also an option. Taxis are a bit scarce (possibly only 2 or 3 of them on the island).

Travel Note

Island Hopping

Folegandros is part of the Cyclades complex of islands in the Aegean Sea (east part of the country). That means it's prime location for island hopping before or after your stay on Folegandros. You could use this as an opportunity to visit Milos, Paros, Naxos, Sifnos, Koufonisia and of course, Santorini or Mykonos, all of which should be fairly easy to get to with the ferry. Although the islands are geographically very close, moving from one to the other probably takes half a day (if not longer) - so they are certainly not day trips! We would generally recommend spending at least 3-4 days in which island you choose to visit.

Travel Note

Greek Weather

We are keeping our fingers crossed for some classic Greek summer weather. Just to translate that from Greek for the Brits: the phrase "Greek summer weather" means it can get hot and very sunny, so don't forget your hats, sunnies, sunscreen and keep drinking that water. And if you do forget, rest assured that photos of you looking like a tomato will be captured by the wedding photographer in glorious high definition. The weather on the islands is typically a bit milder compared to the main land, with the temperature averaging at mid-20s. Winds can also be strong.

Travel Note

Greek Food

Try everything. Plenty of veggie options as well. Having said that, it might prove harder to accommodate some dietary requirements (for instance, gluten free) in the smaller islands like Folegandros. P.S. If you want the equivalent of a doner kebab, ask for a "gyros", either pork or chicken. They come in a pitta wrap and they are excellent. If you ask for souvlaki, you will get the wrap with a (pork or chicken) skewer (sans the stick). Also delicious. On the flip side, though, you will make Georgia mad by calling it a "kebab" - so do keep an open mind.

Accommodation

Go with your gut and budget, but here are a few recommendations. If you don't hire a car, probably easier to stay in Chora. Any time after February / early spring is good to start looking/booking, although bear in mind that some places might not have opened their booking systems yet and may look like they don't have availability although they do. - Pavlosx2 (budget) - Camares (budget) - Meltemi (budget) - Hotel Evgenia (budget) - Antheia (budget) - Aegeo Hotel (mid range) - Aeri Studios (mid range) - Hotel Odysseus (mid range) - Folegandros Apartments (mid range) - Chora Resort (mid range) - Miramare/Belvedere (high end) - Fata Morgana (high end) - Polikandia Hotel (high end) - Mar Inn (high end) - Aria Boutique Hotel (high end)
