We like to joke that we met on Craigslist - and it's technically true! It was 2010 and our senior year at Chico State. Lacey answered a Craigslist ad for a room for rent in the house Brandon had rented. We started out as friends, bonding over our mutual love of the San Francisco Giants, Monday night Karaoke at the Bear, matching red pick up trucks, and quoting our favorite TV shows. After graduation, life took us in different directions, but we always maintained a friendship and talked almost daily over the years.
In 2019, Brandon was living in Orange County and Lacey was living in DFW. We started talking more often and more seriously, and realized we still felt the same way about each other after 8 years apart. Brandon came to visit in September and we went to the final two Rangers games at Globe Life Park. It was like no time had passed at all and we knew we were meant to be together forever.
To say being in a long-distance relationship in 2020 was challenging would be an understatement. After nearly a year of uncertainty and added hardship, we planned a relaxing getaway in Breckenridge, Colorado in December. Being adventure lovers, we booked all-weather ATVs for a self-guided excursion. We arrived to two days of heavy snowfall, but went ahead with the ATV excursion as planned. On the way back to the basecamp, Lacey had a horrible crash on her ATV and suffered multiple fractures of her pelvis and wrist. She spent 2 days in the ICU and 6 days total in the hospital. Brandon stayed by her side the entire time. On the second to last day, with the help of the amazing nursing staff, Brandon took Lacey on a stroll out of her hospital room to a beautifully decorated foyer where he completely surprised her with a proposal and stunning engagement ring. We were so overcome with joy and though a long recovery road was ahead, we knew that we could overcome anything as long as we had each other.
