Driving on 4x4

Part of the rustic experience of OBX that we love is driving on the 4x4 beach right on the sand next to the ocean! Our rental homes and wedding venues for the weekend are all located in the 4X4 area of the beach which requires a 4-wheel drive vehicle in order to get there. Please do NOT try to drive on the beach without a 4-wheel drive vehicle, otherwise your car will get stuck in the sand and will require a tow. Additionally, you will have to air down your tires to the appopriate tire pressure to drive in the sand. Attached is a link with the appropriate tire pressures based upon your size vehicle. https://visitcurrituck.com/visitor-info/beach-driving-tips/ Given the fact you are driving on the sand and along the ocean, you will need to pay attention to the tides. It is best to drive on the beach when it is low tide and there is more beach available and the sand is compacted down. We recommend that the closer you drive to the ocean, the smoother the ride will be. Again, you will need to check the daily tides because in certain spots on the beach the water during high tide can reach almost the dunes and will not allow for much space to drive. You can use the link below in order to track the tides, and of course if you have any questions or concerns please just ask! https://www.twiddy.com/outer-banks/tide-charts/

House Or Rental

Twiddy Home Rentals

If you are staying in a Twiddy home rental on the 4x4 area, check-in times for the homes is not until 4pm. Please make sure that you stop at the grocery store, get gas, and grab all the beer you need before venturing up the beach because it is about a 30-45 minute ride on the sand to the houses! For more information on Twiddy, you can check out their website!

Route 13 & Other Driving Tips!

Most of our guests are going to be driving all the way from NJ (thank you!!) and we wanted to share that when we drive, we always take Route 13. The best rest stops include: Royal Farms gas stations are basically the Wawa of the south- this is our recommended gas station to stop at to fuel up and grab a snack! Check out Powell's Roadside Market on Caratoke Highway in Moyock, NC for the best farm fresh fruits and snacks- it is a staple stop while driving down to OBX! Also make sure you stop at Zaxby's in NC before coming onto the island for the best chicken and fast food ever!!!!

Flight

Norfolk International Airport

If you are not planning to drive, the closest airport to the Outer Banks is Norfolk Airport in Virginia. If you do choose to fly into this airport it is still about a 2 hour drive to the Corolla area and you will most likely need a rental car!
