Late summer is prime hiking season in the Eastern Sierra. You’ll find everything from easy lakeside walks to more adventurous trails with unreal views. The Lakes Basin is the perfect place to go because it is full of hiking trails that range in miles and difficulty. Some of our favorite trails include: Duck Pass (~ 8 miles) , McLeod Lake (~1.5 miles), Deer Lakes loop (~13 miles), and a scenic walk around Horseshoe Lake (~1.5 miles). The Lakes Basin is also a great spot to find a lake to swim in, paddle board, or bike ride on the trails!
Crowley Lake is a dream spot for fishing lovers. There are tons of lakes, streams, and rivers nearby, whether you’re an experienced angler or just trying it out. Licenses are required and easy to grab locally or online.
The perfect place for a lake day! Pack the car with snacks and drinks and enjoy a day sitting lakeside with the sun shinning on your face. Don't forget to stop by Balanced Rock Grill & Cantina after for some fresh margaritas and classic Mexican food!
In the summer months, Mammoth Mountain is a big deal for mountain biking — whether you’re a seasoned rider or just curious to try it out. In the summer, the mountain transforms into a full-on bike park with scenic trails, lift access, and something for every skill level.
One of our favorite accessible activities in Mammoth is watching the sunset at Minaret Vista. It’s an easy stop with one of the best views in the entire area, especially as the sun dips behind the Minarets and the sky lights up in pinks, oranges, and purples.
If you’ve got a sense of adventure (and the right vehicle), the Mammoth area has some incredible off-roading routes and rugged backcountry roads that lead to big views, quiet lakes, and hidden corners of the Eastern Sierra.
Mono Lake is a must-see if you have the time. It’s one of the oldest lakes in North America and feels almost otherworldly, with its famous limestone tufa towers, wide open skies, and incredible light — especially in the late afternoon and at sunset. Mono Lake is about a 45 minute drive north of Mammoth Lakes.
