Steve and Iris met in the very picturesque town of Casablanca. Prior to starting grad school at the University of Michigan, they coincidentally both selected Morocco from a list of available school sponsored trips. Iris always wanted to visit Morocco because of the beautiful textiles and architecture that she read about in blogs and magazines. Steve was already enrolled at a different business school at this time, but when Michigan hired a new football coach, he decided to follow Jim Harbaugh to Ann Arbor. By the time Steve changed his business school destination, Morocco was the only trip left with open spots. It was destiny from the very beginning. The first morning of the trip, they sat at a romantic table for two overlooking the breakfast buffet at a Moroccan Best Western. Iris fielded ignorant questions from Steve about her time living in China, referring to the year she spent teaching in Bali. Iris left unimpressed but still somewhat intrigued by how someone with such low social, cultural, and geographic awareness could stumble his way into one of the top business programs in the country. Despite their differences, Steve and Iris became the best of friends over the course of the school year. They spent many nights mixing it up with college students at Ann Arbor’s hottest dive bars and even lead another trip with a group of incoming students the following August to Southeast Asia (Steve lovingly declared his passion for Tawainese food, when in fact they were headed to Thailand). Later that fall, over an exquisite meal at Hunter House (Steve’s favorite place to pick up “a few” late night hamburgers after a night out), they decided to give dating a try, and the rest is history.
