About Charleston
The largest city in South Carolina, Charleston was founded in 1670 in honor of King Charles II. Known for its hospitality, rich history, and amazing food, Charleston's origin rests in the commercial trade of rice and indigo. In 1861, the firing on Fort Sumter in the Charleston Harbor marked the opening of the Civil War, solidifying the city's place in American History. While Charleston remains as one of the most historically preserved cities in the world, it is home to a number of modern establishments and universities, including the oldest medical school in the Southeastern US - The Medical University of South Carolina.
