Here's a fun museum in the heart of the Presidio (not far from where we're getting married).
This is one of the best easy hikes in the city. It's a pretty flat hike, though there are some paths down to beaches. The views are spectacular! It's also very close to the ruins of Sutro Baths.
If you're taking in Lands End Trail, check this out as well. A short walk down to the ruins of a turn of the 20th Century swim palace that was built right next to the ocean.
One of many beautiful sights in Golden Gate Park, we were considering this for our wedding, before we found our current location. If you're a fan of flowers, plants, trees and peaceful reflection, this is the place for you!
This is a great Aquarium/Natural History Museum. It's also right next to a bunch of other destinations: The De Young Museum, The Japanese Tea Garden, and a big Ferris Wheel are all adjacent!
If you find yourself near Fisherman's Wharf, you should definitely check this out. It's a museum of pinball machines, mechanical games, video games, etc. Most are working, many of them are ancient.
One of Dave's favorite parks in the city. Lot's of trails climbing up, down and through a peaceful canyon in the middle of a crowded city.
If you just want walk on the beach, then grab a bite to eat and/or a cocktail the Park Chalet (and the Beach Chalet are good places to end up. The Park Chalet has indoor and outdoor seating that faces the park. The Beach Chalet is all indoor seating and the windows face the ocean.
There's a ton of things to do in Golden Gate Park. In addition to the San Francisco Botanical Gardens, Japanese Tea Garden, California Academy of Sciences, (listed above) there's lots of walks, meadows and other fun activities. Ride an old Merry-Go-Round at the Children's Playground! Take a boat ride on Stow Lake! Or just sit on a bench and people watch.
The Exploratorium is a fun interactive science museum that's located right on the waterfront. You can take a stroll up and down the Embarcadero afterwards.
The Ferry Building is a beautiful old building on the waterfront that's been converted to a public market place. It's great for wandering around and sampling a variety of delicious local foods.
Fisherman's Wharf is pretty touristy (and if that's your thing, your destination awaits!), but it has a lot more than over-priced souvenirs, though. There's the Cartoon Art Museum, Ghirardelli Square (Dave had his 8th birthday here), the seals at Pier 39 and the only In and Out Burger in the city.
If you're interested in a trip to North Beach some destinations we might suggest: City Lights Books, Specs #12 Adler (a great old bar sometimes with live music) Vesuvio Cafe (a beat era cocktail bar) and Comstock Saloon a great bar/restaurant. There are many more great places if you wander around North Beach and Chinatown is right next door (without too much effort you might find yourself there anyway).
Here's a destination for great pictures! Of course you can also wander around the grand architecture or head over to Chestnut street for a bite to eat. If you're an ambitious hiker you might want to try the Lyon Street steps that are a short walk away.
