April 30, 2022 Commonwealth Room Salt Lake City, Utah St. Paul & the Broken Bones, an incredible, soulful band, was playing in Salt Lake City at the Commonwealth Room. Kayla and Nick were fans of the band well before they met on a warm April night. This being Salt Lake City, where frivolity is traditionally discouraged, hundreds were in attendance, none of whom were dancing. None, that is, save for two revelers dancing in the dark. Between Nick's dancing and a smile that filled his eyes with joy, Kayla had no choice but to break her biggest rule - no talking at concerts - and strike up a conversation. Kayla's first fateful words to Nick, repeated three times over the music (Nick does not hear well) are pure poetry: "DO YOU LIKE MEN OR WOMEN?" And so began a love story colored by adventure, trust, and a landscaping project that has tested the boundaries of their respective sanities. Nick and Kayla nurtured the ember of that night into a steady flame, warming their hearts and home for decades to come. After the concert, Nick and Kayla immediately saw each other as often as possible; which was difficult because Kayla had by then developed a serious knack for travel. Fortunately, Nick shares this love for travel and the two continue to see new places and experience new things whenever they get the chance. From the beaches of Mexico to the bustling metropolis of Boise, Kayla and Nick are the perfect travel partners. They accompany each other easily, enjoying cribbage, puzzles, and a near endless stream of silly jokes. One favorite hobby of Kayla's, which she enjoys sharing with whomever will listen, is imagining the lives of random people in all the different cities she and Nick visit. By now, there are thousands of people for whom Kayla has crafted surprisingly intricate and always hilarious personal narratives. Kayla has adopted, in fits and weather-dependent starts, Nick’s love for University of Utah football. Nick’s tailgating friends and family have warmly accepted Kayla into their circle as they collectively bemoan Cam Rising’s structural integrity. Kayla has graciously shared her love and space with Nick's prior live-in quadruped roommate, Molly. Molly and Kayla have developed a tense, often fraught relationship of absolute adoration and mutual obsession over the years. Together, Kayla and Nick are working (and playing) to create the life they both want for themselves and for each other.
