The Battery runs along the perimeter of Downtown Charleston and has views of both the historic homes and the ocean. White Point Garden is a beautifully landscaped public park located along The Battery and offers shaded benches, picnic areas, and monuments. South of Broad is a neighborhood located right above White Point Garden. We love walking through this residential area which is full of traditional Charleston homes!
Downtown Charleston itself does not offer beaches, but Isle of Palms is a quick 25-minute drive from King Street. Public street parking is available for those who want to hit the beach for the day. Isle of Palms also has some great restaurants and bars! Coda del Pesce serves excellent Italian-inspired seafood. Long Island Cafe offers well-executed local cuisine. Another favorite is Acme, which is open for brunch, lunch, and dinner (pro tip: their pimiento cheese grits are unreal). Also located on Isle of Palms is The Windjammer, a dive bar with snacks and excellent live music. Be sure to check it out if you're on the island for a beach day, or hit The Windjammer for a nightcap if you find yourself on Isle of Palms for dinner!
Another barrier island off the coast of Charleston is Sullivan's Island. Sullivan's small-town feel make it a great choice to spend a few hours either on the beach or walking around their downtown area. There are several restaurants on Sullivan's Island that we love. Mex 1 Coastal Cantina is a surf-style taco spot. Obstinate Daughter has upscale Italian-inspired food and small plates. Poe's Tavern can't be beat for a burger and fries!
Shem Creek is a quick 20-minute drive from Downtown Charleston. The restaurants are all located on the waterway and have excellent views, outdoor dining, and oftentimes live music. Hit Saltwater Cowboys for trashcan nachos and cowboy lemonade. Tavern and Table has more upscale food. Red's Ice House is a perennial favorite that serves old-school Lowcountry fare. Boat trips can also be chartered from the docks located on Shem Creek.
