Traveling to India - What to know

If this is your first time visiting India, here are some helpful tips: • Most travelers require a visa — many nationalities can apply online for an e-Visa in advance. • Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months from your travel date. • It will be summer in Chennai — expect hot, humid weather. Pack light, breathable fabrics and comfortable footwear. • Stay hydrated and drink bottled water (avoid tap water). • The local currency is Indian Rupees (INR); ATMs and card payments are widely accepted. • Electricity uses 230V with Type C/D/M plugs — bring a universal adapter if needed. • Use trusted ride-share apps or hotel-arranged transport when possible. • As with any major city, be mindful of common travel scams and politely decline unsolicited help. If you’re joining us from afar, you’ll be flying into Chennai via Chennai International Airport (MAA). The airport has strong domestic and international connections, and ride-share apps like Uber and Ola are easily available for getting to your hotel or the venue. A few helpful tips: • Allow extra time for traffic — it can be unpredictable. • Stay hydrated (it’s usually warm and humid!). • Keep small cash on hand for autos or small purchases. • Dress light and comfortable when traveling. And if this is your first time in India, you may experience a little culture shock — Chennai is vibrant, colorful, busy, and full of life. Chennai is a vibrant, bustling city — and getting around is easier than you think! Ride-share apps like Uber and Ola are widely available and usually the most convenient way to travel between events. Auto-rickshaws are also a fun (and very local) option for short distances. We recommend allowing extra time for traffic, especially during peak hours.
