A note on the Alice Austen House: Alice Austen was a Victorian photographer and a lesbian who lived on her family's estate, called Clear Comfort, with her lover Gertrude Tate for many years. There, they made art and a life together in a time when queerness was regarded as illegitimate. Today, Clear Comfort is a recognized LGBTQ landmark in New York and an expertly run museum/gallery that highlights Alice's work alongside exhibitions from contemporary queer artists. It is a safe haven for queer people not only on Staten Island but from all over the world who travel here to engage with community. The house's exquisite property right on the Bay is also a New York City public park, offering one of the best views in the city for anyone and everyone to enjoy. We are extremely grateful and honored to celebrate our love in such a special place, where Alice and Gertrude weathered Victorian austerity by nurturing their love and their art on these very grounds.
