Jackson first noticed Sophie on sophomore move-in day. He and his roommate Max were struggling to fit an oversized, second-hand couch into their dorm room—which they solved by stacking all their other possessions in the hallway. At the peak of the chaos, Jackson glanced into the hall and noticed a cute girl nimbly crawling over their furniture and other junk. Embarrassed, he apologized for the mess. As an Orientation Leader, Sophie had already moved into the dorm. Annoyed as she hopped over the couch, she thought to herself, “Is this necessary? It’s just a crummy dorm, why go to all this fuss?” Throughout their sophomore year, they kept noticing each other on campus—at dorm meetings and passing in the stairwell. They made furtive eye contact but did not speak. Sophie observed that Jackson frequently walked up the stairs while eating. Each time Jackson saw Sophie, the more he noticed her beauty. During the next term, they matched on Tinder, which gave Jackson the courage to make a move. But Sophie had deleted Tinder, so their chat disappeared. Perplexed, he reached out to her on Facebook, but his hopes were dashed when she replied that she wasn’t interested in dating. Afterwards, she noticed him more and more, regretting that she’d turned him away. So, she asked a friend who took engineering classes with Jackson to orchestrate a meeting. Sophie was thinking about friendship ... just getting to know him. During their first hangout, he played her some songs. She thought, “Hmmm, that’s actually pretty good.” He wore a red shirt and red converse shoes, a choice that seemed funny to her. “I could tell he was very intellectual but also creative. I wanted to explore that more.” Since Jackson felt loss for words in her company, he liked that Sophie was good at carrying a conversation. Plus, she had interesting things to say. Her friends were fun, and she was gung-ho for adventurous activities. During the last few weeks of sophomore year, they officially became a couple. Over the summer, they fell in love. When Sophie moved to Glasgow that fall for her study abroad, their relationship weathered the long distance. They’ve been dating ever since and started living together after their graduation in June 2020.
