Shu & Jamie

Wedding Party

We are lucky to have these friends in our lives!

Shara He

Sister of Honor

The Sistre. Shara has known Shu her entire life. Literally. While today they are almost exactly the same size... Almost (Shara is a bit taller), it seems like only yesterday that Shu found herself dying of laughter as baby Shara crawled backwards down the stairs in their old house in Canada. Shu and Shara share the great talents of having the exact same reaction to the same situations, having coherent conversations while their mouths are full, finding endless amusement in walking in or out of step next to each other (Shu preferring to be out of step, Shara insisting they be in step), and hibernating as twin bears in each others beds. Occasionally Shara makes it a point to educate Shu on the latest teenage crazes and lingo so that Shu can stay up to date.

Chris Gabriel

Best Man

With some of their favorite memories made taking apart things that should probably not have been taken apart (and almost certainly should have been unplugged first) or chasing each other around until someone ended up with stitches, it's no wonder Jamie can often be found on Saturday mornings working on strange side projects Chris has somehow roped them into. The consummate guide for his oft unprepared younger brother in subjects such as dressing without cargo pants, sailing without spilling the champagne, and the proper number of exclamation points per email, Chris has long been working behind the scenes to shape Jamie into a Banana Republic sporting, cocktail party charming, semblance of respectability. This August, we will have the chance to see if his urbane teachings have paid off!

Katie Harper

Maid of Honor

Fellow band nerd Katie met both Shu and Jamie on the marching band field at Duke University. Their shared love of music, sports, and shenanigans brought them together frequently throughout undergrad, but they did not let graduation stop the fun! The friendship has lived on in the form of random meetups all over the country and silly video chats when travel is not possible. May the group’s love for all things Duke allow Katie to third-wheel the pair forever.

Matt Hudecek

Groomsman

Matt and Jamie have known each other forever. We don't mean in a "oh they've been friends for a while" kinda forever, we mean they literally can't remember a time when they didn't know each other. Closer to brothers than friends, Jamie and Matt are famous for arguing "Sparging"[1] over such issues as "pulp vs no-pulp" in OJ (pt. Matt), and the guest's property rights over a leftover calzone (begrudgingly pt. Jamie). Matt is thrilled to congratulate Shu and Jamie, and happily passes on the torch of correcting Jamie when he's wrong on to Shu to hold in perpetuity. Welcome to the family Shu... sorry about his OJ preferences. [1] Combining "sport" and "arguing". "Sparging" was coined by Matt's mother in a moment of frustrated brilliance while trying to get Jamie and Matt to stop arguing.

Doris Jwo

Bridesmaid

Half of ShuperDuper, fellow late night muncher, college roomie Doris met Shu during orientation week at Duke. We bonded over food, Stella (sidenote: Stella is a futon, not beer), and “study” sessions at Lilly Library. Looking back, their relationship could be summed up with the following: discussing what we just ate, planning when/where to eat next, extravagantly hunting for obscure foods or how to make them instead, and discussing what to order for an hour(s) only to end up ordering the exact same thing, spicy level and all. I guess there’s just something about stuffing our faces that’s created a lasting bond. On second thought, that might be the cholesterol still clogging our collective arteries from 30 cent Dillo wings circa ’07.

Ritz Martinovic

Groomsman

Fellow Pratt Survivor Ritz first met Jamie freshman year at Duke in physics lab. They had been assigned to work together. Because I loved to break everything, I spent most of the lab running side experiments while Jamie got angry at me for not focusing and touching things I wasn’t supposed to. Rough start. Unknowingly, Jamie and I had both accepted our bids to SigEp. Over the next three years our friendship grew on a steady diet of Duke basketball, late nights obsessing over engineering projects, getting swull, winning beer pong championships, questionable college level decision making and of course...Star Trek. When Jamie needed a wingman to help propose to Shu in Cameron, he gave me a call and so the rest is history! A huge congratulations to both Shu and Jamie! Live long and prosper.

Anna Costello-Dougherty

Bridesmaid

The Guacamole to Shu's Salsa Anna and Shu met during business school orientation, reaching for the same bagel (I think). They’ve bonded over multiple people watching sessions at various Anderson events and spend most of their friendship texting about when they will next go to Harry Potter World and whether an event warrants putting on pants and leaving the house (most do not). Anna is impressed that Shu found a way to not put on pants and still attend her own wedding (lucky Jamie!).

Ben Mackey

Groomsman

Over 20 years ago, the Gabriel's moved in next to the Mackey's and the rest was history. Only 100 yards, a low fence, and a sparse tree-line separated Ben and Jamie from countless sleepovers hot-pockets, and videogames. After high school, Ben and Jamie set off on two radically different educational and career paths. Despite college in separate Carolina states, the Marine Corps deployments, graduate schools, and life on opposite coasts, they always found time to meet and catch up over a drink or three like time hadn't passed between them. Ben would also like to make sure credit is given where it's due and suggests the following adjustment #JamieTiesHisShuOnTimeWithHerHelp Congratulations to you both!

Aubrey Rho

Bridesmaid

Shu's on-paper doppelganger and real-life partner in crime. Aubrey is Shu's Amazon work wife and fellow co-founder of the Amazon Go Tuna Salad Enthusiasts Association. They were destined to meet (and both kind of knew Jamie at Duke), and continue to be friends because Shu decorates her cookies with weird emojis, and Aubrey willingly eats them 💩🍪 Aubrey and Shu are making grand plans to conquer Seattle one step at a time. Step 1: Trick Amazon Go!

Eli Raneses

Groomsman

Jamie and Eli met way in elementary school and became friends after spending many nights together in Matt's basement. The process in a few words: video games, late night chats, pool, and practicing kung-fu/wrestling/jui-jitsu moves on each other (safely…). There’s no question that Jamie is a good friend. He’s tall, devilishly handsome (better in poor lighting), and helps with cat tree construction projects. Jamie has all the common traits one looks for in friend. But for all his greatness, there was always the issue of his phone. Whether it was buried in a snow bank or in his pocket, Jamie nevered answer calls. Since being with Shu, though the positive effects are innumerable, for now the one I am grateful for is Jamie now answering the phone (once in awhile).

Lindsey Cash

Bridesmaid

Business school work wife Shu and Lindsey may have been forced together on the first day of business school, but they have been inseparable ever since. From classes, to projects, to general existence, wherever there is a Shu, there is a Lindsey. Though they'll be moving to different cities after graduation, and there is genuine concern whether Lindsey will succeed in the 'real world' without Shu's presence, Lindsey supposes she can share Shu and let her be someone else's wife (you're welcome, Jamie).

Will Baskin

Groomsman

Former Couchmate Jamie and Will met freshman year as fellow pledges in SigEp. They later become roommates and housemates, performed many a shenanigan together, and Jamie was a groomsman in Will's wedding last summer. Why has it been important for Will to remain close to Jamie? Well, Jamie’s kept me out of trouble so many times that Will has become the Jacopo to his Edmond Dantes! Jokes aside (although Will does owe him a life debt). Jamie is one of the most true and steadfast people Will considers himself lucky to call Jamie a friend. Will could not be happier for Jamie and Shu! Congrats you guys!
