Feel free to join us for hikes in the beautiful landscape, a trip up the gondola on a mountain overlooking Tromsø, a fishing trip under the midnight sun, or a sauna and bathing in the harbor. We will let you know as June approaches what we plan to do when. And feel free to let us know if there's anything else on your bucket list so we can try to help arrange it!

What did hunters/trappers and explorers encounter in the far north? At the Polar Museum, you can learn about expeditions, everyday life and adventures in the Arctic from the 17th century up to the present day. With its location far to the north, Tromsø has served as the gateway to the Arctic for adventurers, hunters and researchers. Their exhibitions convey fascinating stories such as explorer Willem Barents’ very first encounter with a polar bear, daring hot air balloon expeditions over the polar regions and lonely Christmases in a trapper’s hut. The exhibitions communicate polar history with national and local roots. Our permanent exhibitions are about sealing, overwintering, polar expeditions and the cultural history of Svalbard. The temporary exhibitions are based on new polar research. Be prepared for some questionable taxidermy!
We have reserved the whole sauna on Wednesday June 18th from 5:00 to 6:00pm! So come join us then :) Make sure to book a time slot in advance! It isn't as busy in the summer months, but still could be a good idea to book at least a day in advance. Also bring your own towel. There is a men's and women's changing room with a locker and a shower and ladders to dip into and climb out of the ocean.
The Troll Museum in Tromsø is the first and only troll museum in Norway, created using modern Augmented Reality (AR) technology. This translates into a unique and different museum experience where you can dip your toes into Norwegian folklore and discover how the idea of trolls has changed over time. The Road of trolls exhibit will take you on an insightful journey about all things troll, from the very beginning. Find out what the universe looked like according to the Vikings, read the fairy tales that Norwegian parents have been telling their children for centuries, and see what trolls look like in their natural habitats.
The ice bar and art gallery is the work of world-renowned ice carvers! Here you can “follow” in the footsteps of the early arctic explorers such as Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen and others. This exhibit tells their stories of adventure and discovery as it sails through the North Pole. You can also visit the expedition’s ship made of crystal clear ice. They provide warm winter ponchos and gloves before you step inside the ice bar. A welcome drink served in an ice glass is included with the entrance fee.
Telegrafbukta is located at the southern tip of the Tromsø island and is easily accessible to everyone. The area consists of large grasslands, forest areas, beach and boulders. In two comprehensive exhibitions, Tromsø Museum show how the Sami people have mastered the art of surviving in the cold conditions of Northern Norway and established themselves as an indigenous people in modern-day Scandinavia. This exhibition presents the traditional life of the Sami people. Starting with the hunting community around 200AD, the exhibition shows the transition to a nomadic way of life. The reindeer herding, the migration routes and the dwellings are presented, as well as a multitude of Sami clothing and crafts.
Visit our two exhibitions on the author and painter Cora Sandel/Sara Fabricius (1880–1974). She is best known for her novels about Alberta, a young woman from a small northern town, with a life-story not unlike the author’s own. You’ll encounter historical objects, visual art, literature, and comics. Listen to excerpts from the artist’s letters or explore her collection of photographs and archive materials whilst surrounded by her own paintings, objects and books. On the ground floor we show the exhibition New Standards ¬– With photographs by Juuso Westerlund. In 1940, the enterprise Puutalo was established to help during Finland’s enormous refugee crisis, as 420 000 people needed rehousing due to the Winter War. Through text and archival materials, the exhibition tells the story of Puutalo’s housing production, while new photographs by Juuso Westerlund show glimpses of people’s lives in Puutalo homes in Colombia, Denmark and Finland.
Through art we offer new perspectives on the North, life and the people who live here. The museum presents varied exhibitions of Norwegian and international art, with a special focus on contemporary northern and Sami art and crafts.
