St. Charles tourism center and website has lots of information on what to do in the area and is a great guide when planning your trip. 
Downtown St. Charles is filled with places to eat, antique stores, wineries, riverside walking trails and lots of historical information about the area.
The streets of St. Charles is more modern with hotels, places to eat, movie theatre and kids museum.
The free St Charles trolley runs Friday-Sunday 11am-7pm and connects Downtown St Charles to The Streets of St Charles, it is also walkable.

St Louis is very family friendly with a free zoo, great parks and City Museum that’s fun for all ages! The Gateway Arch has a great museum to learn about the history of the city and make sure to carve out time to take a tour of Anheuser-Busch brewery!
