Ricobene’s has been a Chicago staple for 60 years. If you are looking to try what USA Today hails as the “Best Sandwich in the World” be sure you are hungry as it is huge. We ordered one to split and could have feed 5-6 people. I suggest ordering it all the way to get the full experience of red sauce, mozzarella cheese and giardiniera (pickled veggies). Ricobene’s is open late so if you are looking for a late-night snack-stop by, it’s worth it!
Cloud Gate is a public sculpture by Indian-born British artist Sir Anish Kapoor, that is the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at Millennium Park in the Loop community area of Chicago, Illinois. The sculpture and AT&T Plaza are located on top of Park Grill, between the Chase Promenade and McCormick Tribune Plaza & Ice Rink. Constructed between 2004 and 2006, the sculpture is nicknamed The Bean because of its shape, a name Kapoor initially disliked, but later grew fond of. Made up of 168 stainless steel plates welded together, its highly polished exterior has no visible seams. It measures 33 by 66 by 42 feet, and weighs 110 short tons.
Buckingham Fountain is a Chicago landmark in the center of Grant Park. Dedicated in 1927, it is one of the largest fountains in the world. Built in a rococo wedding cake style and inspired by the Latona Fountain at the Palace of Versailles, it is meant to allegorically represent Lake Michigan. It operates from April to October, with regular water shows and evening color-light shows. During the winter, the fountain is decorated with festival lights.
While in Chicago you absolutely must try a Chicago Hot Dog. David and I tried one and by our second determined that it was soooo good we ate at least 3 more before leaving. You can get them from all around the city, but Portillo’s is one of the places that is a local favorite. David and I got ours from street vendors as we walked around downtown and while each vendor put a different spin on the Chicago classic- a typical Chicago hot dog with everything consists of mustard, relish, celery salt, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, kosher pickle and sport peppers piled onto a perfectly steamed poppy seed bun. I know, I know… your thinking all that on a hotdog- but try it- you will not be sorry and if you are- try another one and let me know your verdict.
David found this gem on a random side street of the Magnificent Mike. Much like he does, he ordered the best burger I’ve ever eaten- it was the perfect mash up of gourmet burger meets homemade goodness, dripping with American cheeses and all the right fixings- it is worth the calories!
If your looking to get in a quick shopping spree- Chicago’s Magnificent Mile is for you. You can get your fill of shoes, clothing, jewelry, handbags, home goods, and even pet boutiques. There is no end to the things you will find on this magnificent mile of shopping. There are also tons of food options and historic landmarks such as the iconic Chicago Water Tower.
Its close proximity to downtown and The Magnificent Mile makes Oak Street Beach an easy (and scenic) pit stop. That also means you’ll get an up-close view of some iconic Chicago buildings, like 875 N. Michigan Ave. and historic The Drake Hotel. On the beach, you’ll find bike rentals, chair rentals, volleyball courts, and plenty of space to swim and spread out in the sand. This beach hosts a number of popular amateur and professional volleyball tournaments throughout the summer. 1000 N. Lake Shore Drive (Oak Street and Lake Shore Drive)
