How We Met

Awkwardly, of course!

Fun fact: We met through Tinder. Long story short, although never planning to meet in person, Elizabeth saw Carlos sitting at a bench in Hornbake Plaza on UMD campus. So she did what a normal person would do and walked the other direction as quickly as possible. Except that her next class was through the plaza. A classmate of hers thought it was hilarious that she was avoiding meeting this man, so when walking through the plaza she yelled "BYE, ELIZABETH." This, of course, made Carlos look up. Elizabeth decided she may as well walk over and say hi, as that was much cooler than appearing to run away. She walked over, struck up a (very awkward) conversation with a (debatably) studious Carlos. Carlos was immediately struck by Elizabeth's fearlessness and excellent conversation skills and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Engagement

Lies upon lies

For those who don't know, Elizabeth has been in Physician Assistant school in Miami since 2018, while Carlos lived in Virginia. Elizabeth was placed in Michigan for a month of school during July, 2020. While there, they decided that she should stop over in Maryland to see everyone for a weekend before heading back down to Florida. All of a sudden everything came together in such a way that she would get to see her entire close family and some of her closest friends in that short time period. What a coincidence! Or so she thought. Upon landing in Maryland, she changed into more presentable clothing, under the assumption that she was going to a housewarming party. A stopover at UMD was planned so Richard could take some photos as he was, supposedly, moving to Florida the following day. While walking across Hornbake Plaza (where Elizabeth and Carlos first met), Carlos decided Cody (our lovely old dog) had something in his collar and knelt down to "fix it." Elizabeth is rarely surprised by things (comes of that April Fools Day Birthday), but she had zero idea that this was coming and basically freaked out and froze during the actual engagement, to the point that the words "...so....that's a yes?" had to be spoken. Caroline was hidden with a camera across the plaza and Elizabeth's family was all present, with a sign and a picnic and champagne. It. Was. Amazing. Tl;dr: Lots of lies were spoken to fool Elizabeth into not expecting the best day of her life.
