We first met in the fall of Sean’s first year at Harvard Business School (HBS), thanks to our mutual friend Shane, who was Sean’s sectionmate at HBS. Yuka was preparing to apply to HBS, and since Sean has experience working both in the US and Japan (and was single…), Shane thought it would be a good idea to connect us over Zoom. What started as a simple meet-and-greet quickly turned into something more — at least for Sean, who fell head-over-heels right away. Over the next month, we stayed in touch, and in November 2023 — during Yuka's visit for an official campus tour — we met in person for the first time over dinner near Harvard Square. That’s when Sean knew he had to pursue Yuka seriously. Through countless Zoom calls about Yuka’s essays and applications — which always lasted much longer than planned — we discovered a real connection. Sean eventually confessed his feelings during finals week, and when Yuka said yes, he was so thrilled that he couldn't focus and ended up failing his accounting exam (he still passed the class, thankfully!). In May of the following year, Sean proposed to Yuka in Tokyo, a place that holds a special meaning for both of us. Yuka said yes — and the rest is history!

私たちが出会ったのはショーンが ハーバード・ビジネス・スクール（HBS）に 入学した最初の秋のこと きっかけはショーンのクラスメイトであり 私たちの共通の友人でもある 柴田さんの紹介でした 当時ユカはHBSへの出願準備をしており アメリカと日本の両方で働いた経験があり（しかも独身だった） ショーンを「相談出来るいい人がいるよ」と 柴田さんが紹介してくれ Zoomで話すことになりました 最初はごく普通の顔合わせのつもりでしたが それはすぐに特別な時間に変わりました ―少なくともショーンは出会った瞬間からすっかりユカに夢中だったようです その後も連絡を取り合い 2023年11月にユカがHBSの キャンパスビジットでボストンを訪れた際　 ハーバード対イェールの試合の翌日に 初めて直接会って夕食をともにしました　 このときショーンは「ユカが運命の人だ」と強く感じたそうです ユカの出願エッセイの相談という名目で Zoomでのやりとりが重ねられましたが　 いつも話は盛り上がり 朝方まで電話するのが常でした そうした会話の中で 互いの価値観や考え方を知り 自然と心の距離も縮まっていきました そして学期末の2023年12月に ショーンはついに想いを伝えます ユカがその気持ちを受け止めてくれたとき ショーンは嬉しさのあまり 試験勉強が手につかず会計の試験に 落ちかけたほどだったとか （※無事に単位は取れたようです） そして翌年5月ふたりにとって 特別な思い出のある東京で ショーンがユカにプロポーズ ふたりはこれからの人生を 共に歩んでいくことを決めました
