Things To Do

We're excited to share a few of our favorite places in the area, so that you can enjoy your own activities during your visit. Helen loves the boutiques and bakeries on Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea. If you love architecture and ocean views, you could go for a 17-mile drive on... Seventeen Mile Drive in Pebble Beach, where at age 3, Helen once promised to buy her mother a "big house". In June, it's possible to see humpback whales and blue whales during their migration, (as well as dolphins, seals, and sea otters). If you're not prone to sea sickness, you should book a whale-watching tour that departs from Monterey Old Fisherman’s Wharf, then have a seafood lunch on the wharf. From October to February, monarch butterflies cluster together on pine, cypress and eucalyptus trees in Pacific Grove, which is an awe-inspiring sight, so be certain to return to this historic and natural area full of life and wonder.
Monterey Bay Aquarium

Monterey Bay Aquarium

886 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA 93940
, (831) 648-4800

This was one of Helen's favorite places to spend time with her dad, when she was growing up. Bring your entire family here to anchor your day at Cannery Row on the Monterey waterfront, once immortalized by John Steinbeck and now a busy tourists' attraction.

17 Mile Drive

You'll need to pay a small gate fee of $11.25 per car (and please have rented or driven your own car). The gate fee is reimbursed with a purchase of $35 or more at all Pebble Beach Resorts restaurants, excluding Pebble Beach Market. Admission for tour buses is $5.50 per passenger. Admission is complimentary for overnight guests of The Lodge at Pebble Beach, The Inn at Spanish Bay and Casa Palmero. The 17-Mile Drive gates are open to the public from sunrise to sunset. Motorcycles are prohibited.

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

62 California 1, Carmel-by-the-Sea, CA 93923
, (831) 624-4909

About 15 minutes' drive south of Monterey, Point Lobos State Reserve offers easy trails and gorgeous ocean views. Parking inside Point Lobos State Natural Reserve costs $10. You can park outside the Reserve along Highway 1 and it is free but a $1 donation is recommended. Parking is very limited (only 75 parking spots!) in Point Lobos State Reserve so plan on getting there early or later in the day. You are most likely to find a parking spot before 9:30 am or after 3:00 pm. Bring a takeaway picnic for your family, friends or lover, and enjoy the walking, talking and the ocean view! https://www.pointlobos.org/
