Charming local beach town on the Atlantic Ocean accessed via bus service (25 minute journey) and delightful (slower) 1910s tram connection Sintra to Praia das Maçãs. From Praia das Maçãs, it is a short walk to Praia Grande (larger, lively, popular for surfing beach with massive cliffs ft. fossilized dinosaur tracks) or a longer walk northwards toward the village of Azenhas do Mar. Note, if it is a blustery day, head to Cascais for sheltered beaches of the Portugese Riviera.
This fishing town is further from our venue (45 minute drive) but was recommended to us by a Portuguese friend. It is a go-to for surfing culture, with surf schools, trendy restaurants, and more stunning coastline.
Here are some recommendations from a Portuguese friend: - Alfama neighborhood (touristy scenic spots: Miradouro das Portas do Sol; Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Ride the tram through the neighborhood. Lisbon Cathedral. Castelo de S. Jorge. Santa Justa Lift. Lots of small coffee shops!) - Chiado neighborhood (shopping and theater hub, Livraria Bertrand bookstore est. 1732) - Praça do Comércio (waterside historic plaza) - Time Out Market (very busy high end market, reviewers say it's very touristy!) - Torre de Belém (medieval tower on the river) - Pastéis de Belém (large pastry shop, get the pastel de nata) - Restaurants: A Cevicheria; Praia no Parque (the food scene seems wonderful--do your research!) - Bars: Bairro Alto (boho neighborhood with outdoor bars); Pink Street (nightlife area); Topo Chiado (reviews show the view is much better than the food)
