Yes! If you are traveling to popular spots like Lisbon, Algarve, Porto, Sintra and the likes, you can be assured of finding English speaking people there. Plenty of foreigners live comfortably and reasonably efficiently speaking only in English. (In fact, it can be difficult to find a Portuguese who will speak to you in Portuguese.)
A short trip outside Lisbon (approx. 30 minute drive west of the Lisbon airport), the town of Sintra lies within its own municipality in Lisbon District at the foot of the hills of the Serra de Sintra mountains. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the mountains overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and rich with history, the town is a popular tourist destination. The Cultural Landscape of Sintra is classifed by UNESCO as a World Heritage site, and the region is encompassed by a natural park, Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais. Yes, of course there are also nearby hiking and mountain biking trails. Sintra is home to a collection of castles, palaces, and royal villas. The Romantic architecture of these sights dates back to the 19th century when Sintra was a thriving retreat for the royal family and Lisbon nobility. Older medieval remains, including the Castelo dos Mouros and the Convent of the Capuchos are also popular. While Sintra is not known as a beach town, the stunning beaches nestled among cliffs are a 20 minute drive west of the town center.
