The Polish Wedding Dance: A family tradition for everyone The Wedding Dance is A Polish-American tradition that takes place near the end of a wedding reception. This was the favorite part of every wedding for Sarah's grandfather, Ted. To the tune of a lively polka, guests line up and toss dollar bills into the Maid of Honor's apron for a turn to dance with the bride. After the guests dance, they take a shot and join the growing circle around the bride waving their hankies to encourage the remaining dancers, continuing until everyone has had their turn. At the end, the father and mother of the bride both take their turns. The mother then removes the bride's veil as a sign of her transition from maiden to woman. The guests then playfully form a protective circle around the bride and the groom tries to enter the circle to rescue his bride. Traditionally, once the groom breaks through the circle he carries his bride out and off to their honeymoon.
