Samuel grew up the middle child of three boys in northwestern New Jersey, where his parents still live on Schooley's Mountain. All the boys spilled out onto the countryside whenever they could, although Samuel particularly loved the hiking trails across the street and the public library just a short traipse through the woods. Any friends and family can vouch that he was always full of questions, redirecting the course of his academic and religious paths. Thankfully he found a calling which encourages and rewards those questions, although medicine does not leave much time for playing violin, experimenting in the kitchen, being outdoors, or even much reading outside of his work. Whether he is called Sam or Tzvi, he is always known as a helper - constantly seeking personal growth and development in himself and others, it is a passion of his to maximize the positive impact we can each have on the world. That difference starts with one. He is thrilled to have changed that number to two!
Andrea was born and raised in Miami, FL. Her mother is of Cuban-Turkish-Jewish descent and her father is of American-Polish-Russian descent. She is the proud older sister of her brother, David Bennett, with whom she enjoys singing along to musicals and oldies. Andrea grew up dancing classical ballet but now enjoys all types of dance, mostly engaging in Latin styles such as salsa and bachata. In her spare time, you can usually find Andrea in the kitchen. Her favorite things to make are the Turkish delicacies that her abuela (grandmother) taught her. Currently, Andrea is 26 years old, lives in New York City, and is working as an Occupational Therapist in a middle school in the Bronx with children with autism spectrum disorder and learning challenges. Andrea is thrilled to be leaving the big city and starting a home with someone who both appreciates people's differences and enjoys good food and the arts (preferably paired together).
1/11/19 is the first time we met in person. Then 111 days later (Sam likes to keep count), we got engaged. 111 also (according to Andrea) represents the most important parties in our relationship—Andrea, G-d, and Sam (in alphabetical order).
1) We often communicate without words. Not only can we often tell what the other is thinking or feeling just by looking at each other, we also enjoy using sign language to communicate (Sam is much more fluent, but Andrea is slowly learning). 2) We have a remarkably similar food palate, which means that we like to share just about everything. At this point, Sam has learned to appreciate Andrea’s ability to doctor everything she eats to their liking, so she usually gets first bite so she may fix it to their mutual taste. 3) We love being a part of the beauty that can be found in all living and growing things. That’s why our marriage proposal was somewhere that had gorgeous greenery and we made sure to have a terrific view for the wedding.
Sam communicated “I love you” first by signing it, but Andrea was the first to verbalize it. I guess we’ll call that a tie 😉.
Andrea will be moving to Lancaster, PA while Sam finishes his medical residency (come visit!). Then we will be applying for a second residency and seeing where our next steps lead us.
No. The Turkish tradition is not to eat rice on Passover.
