In fall 2017, Ruhee was a student at UC Davis Law School, and Jacob was a student at UC Berkeley Law School. From their separate campuses, both decided to apply for an externship at the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. Both received an offer. Ruhee accepted – but Jacob declined, deciding to take another position on Capitol Hill. Fate, however, would not be denied! Though they would not work together, Ruhee and Jacob each journeyed to D.C. in early 2018 and joined a seminar class for UC students spending the spring semester in the U.S. capital. They met at a bar, on a wintry night, while attending an event organized by other seminar students. Ruhee arrived late that evening, and Jacob still remembers seeing her for the first time - her big eyes materializing out of the darkness of the dimly lit bar. Once they started talking, Jacob was immediately intrigued by Ruhee's thoughtful banter, while Ruhee was swept by Jacob's Midwestern charm. They spent the next few weeks realizing how much they had in common, including their mutual love of reading, music, and cupcakes (with Baked & Wired quickly becoming a regular favorite). Soon thereafter – as the nearby cherry blossoms were blooming – they realized they were in love. Life after that D.C. semester would, at times, pull Jacob and Ruhee in different directions. Jacob's career took him to Chicago, and Ruhee's to California. Yet, when required, a door would always open for their future together. Eventually, Jacob received an opportunity to move to Los Angeles, where Ruhee was living. He took it. Now, Ruhee and Jacob live in Carlsbad, though they also consider both Chicago and Los Angeles as second homes (given how much time they spend in both places with their family and friends). They know they are extraordinarily lucky – not least because of the people around them who have made their journey possible, the same people that they cannot wait to celebrate with this April.
