Rebecca and Laura were classmates at the University of Kiel, and celebrated their birthday together on March 30th, 2019 by co-hosting a party. Julian and Laura volunteered together at the Hansa 48 self-help bike kitchen. Thankfully, Laura invited Julian to the party! Early in the evening, in between enjoying the potluck dinner and sipping rhubarb schnaps, we met and got to talking a bit. When the party moved to a dance venue, somehow the two of us ended up biking over together separately from the group, and we got to talking a lot. We found ourselves standing outside the club in animated conversation talking about everything and nothing for 2 hours before finally remembering to go inside and join the others. We danced with our friends but stayed close together. We haven't left each other's side or stopped talking since!
As an international couple with friends and family split evenly between the US and Germany, we always knew our decision to marry came with a few extra hurdles. For one, where to marry is a legal concern with immigration implications. But more importantly, we knew we would need to have two weddings, so that we could celebrate with all our loved ones on both sides of the pond. So we tied the knot with a simple (and comically short!) ceremony on June 17th, 2023, standing under a beautiful tree and blue skies in the remote countryside of Denmark. We were cheered on by a close circle of family and friends, who then heroically leapt into the kitchen to save the day, because our catering for the post-ceremony luncheon had fallen through just that morning. That afternoon we were serenaded, toasted, given thoughtful gifts, made to put our knowledge of each other to the test in a hilarious game, and surprised with a giant cake in the shape of a tandem bicycle! Following an evening feast, we danced the short midsummer night away. It was a joyful and absolutely perfect day, reflecting one aspect of our lives together, and our community in northern Germany. We feel so lucky to be able to celebrate again in Portland, to honor the village that raised Rebecca and which has so heartily welcomed Julian. We look forward to commemorating our union with a ceremony in which there is no mention of "the appropriate paperwork" having been filed. Thank you for being in our lives and celebrating with us! We can't wait!
