We met at a dinner in October of Freshmen year. Neither of us remember much about that dinner (Becca did not know anyone at the table and Peter was several people away), but after that dinner we were in the same group of friends. We ate dinners together and watched movies. Officially our first date was making fun of "The Room" under christmas lights with candy in February. Unofficially, if you ask all of our friends, our first date was at church. I (Becca) got worried our friends would tell Peter I liked him if I didn't do something so I asked him if I could go to church with him. That weekend we spent all of Saturday doing homework and chatting. Chatting led to laughing, playing ping pong, making paper airplanes, eating dinner, and seeing a very silly play together. We ended up at a very unique church service and every day after that we spent talking and laughing and sometimes watching movies until our first "real date."
We had just arrived back in the United States after our trip to France and then spent a week where one of us was sick and then a week apart after that. When we were finally back together it was the middle of the work week so we started planning a date for the weekend. We decided to combine challenge night (our adventurous or difficult recipes that we cook together on Saturdays) with a picnic date. We went to the grocery store the day before and got nice cheese, fresh fruit, juice, nice chocolate, shortbread, and whoopie pies. At home we made homemade ciabatta to go along with our meal. The day of our picnic date was perfect weather and we drove over to the Bates College quad together. We set up our picnic in the grass and took photos on a disposable camera while we ate and laughed and enjoyed the summer weather. When we finished eating the lunch portion, Becca asked if we should eat dessert by the lake. We started packing up the food we had brought and Peter had Becca stand up to brush off the picnic blanket. Peter was then down on one knee and asked Becca to marry him, and she said yes! The rest of the day we spent excitedly talking and calling relatives and friends and figuring out how we want to spend our first day as an engaged couple. We decided on dinner out and a new dvd to watch at home though we can't remember which one it was now.
