Beautiful views of Downtown Birmingham from the symbol of our wonderful hometown! Vulcan stands 56 feet tall, from toe to spear point, upon a 124-foot pedestal rising to a height of 180 feet and weighs 101,200 pounds. Vulcan is the largest cast iron statue in the world and the largest metal statue ever made in the United States.
Fun hikes and great views! Check out King's Chair (roughly 2 mile hike) to see a great view of the rolling, tree covered landscape of Alabama.
Since the hops were freed, there are some amazing breweries that have popped up in Birmingham. Here is a list of some of our favorites: Cahaba Brewing, Good People, Avondale, Trim Tab, Ghost Train, and Hop City has 60 taps for the rest of your micro-brew needs (from AL and elsewhere).
This is such a cool place! Modeled as a speakeasy, you'll enter the bar via a large phone booth located in the neighboring hot dog diner "Hot Diggity Dog". After you convince the hostess that you're not going to bust them for breaking prohibition laws, you'll be led through a secret door into the 1920's bar with themed drinks, decoration, and attire. In this Avondale neighborhood you'll find Avondale Brewing, Parkside Bar, Fancy's on 5th Burger and Oyster Bar, Melt, and Saw's BBQ Soul Kitchen (Jake's personal favorite food of all time!).
We cannot improve our future without learning from the past. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute provides a deep and humbling look into the history of Birmingham.
For those of you who have children (or those of you that still have a youthful enjoyment of science) definitely check out the McWane Science Center. It's full of fun experiments that are educational and fun!
The Birmingham Zoo is fun for all with a fantastic display of animals and a fun playground for the kids as well!
