Both Rachel and I pursued a Masters program in Art Education, taking night classes at Brooklyn College where we first met and was the catalyst for our quick friendship. We bonded over 80's music, funny dancing, and the prospects of being a teacher. Rachel soon consulted her astrology charts to see if the universe had any extra plans for us. It did...
During the end of the first year of Brooklyn College, Rachel and I were both in a visual cultures class and were given a final project to make a documentary about a subculture of our choice to present to the class. I ended up choosing "promposals," the act of elaborately staging a request to be someones date to prom, something that was becoming increasingly popular in high schools around the country. During my research Rachel told me that although she attended prom, she was never actually asked (put that info away for later). When it was my turn to present, I showed my documentary to the class. At the end the screen when dark and up came the words, "Rachel told me that she was never asked to the prom..." (yup). I then grabbed a guitar that I had placed in the classroom and directed my attention to Rachel. I proceeded to play an original song about our friendship and what it would be like if we were to go to prom now. It was creatively titled, "The Prom Song." In the middle of the song, the boys in the class stood up each holding a rose, as others filmed the event. They sang along and eventually presented the roses to Rachel. At the end I asked if she would go to prom with me. With a confused red face, she said yes. A few weeks after that, we officially got together.
