Engagement Story: The Infinity Proposal

The Wedding Website of Pokam Takougang and Douglas Ngomsi
Back in June of 2018 Doug casually presented a challenge to Pokam called the “Infinity Challenge”, a game for my dame to collect all 6 Infinity Stones like in the Marvel movie Avengers InfinityWar that we both enjoyed on a date the month prior. The Challenge required her to successfully acquire the 6 stones —Space, Power, Time, Reality, Mind, and Soul— by completing 6 unique tasks that each represent an aspect of our experiences together. Like in the movie, each Infinity Stone has its own symbolism, and requires a combination of skill, patience, persistence, and guile to obtain. Collecting all 6 of the stones and affixing them to the Infinity Gauntlet would cause a mysterious event to occur with the snap a finger. Though she had more questions than Doug was willing to answer, Pokam accepted the Challenge… A "Challenge Card” would then be mailed to her home each month. These next few pages take you through the journey to Infinity.
Question

Where can I see photos of the proposal story?

Answer

The story behind all 6 stones leading to the proposal can be found under "Photo Gallery". Read below for the detailed story of each, leading to the climactic proposal.

Question

How was the 1st Stone (SPACE) earned?

Answer

The SPACE Stone (July 2018: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic) Description: “The Space Stone grants the user omnipresence. To earn it, you must lift a Slingshot B2 Trainer Kite –using the wind– from the ground, and steer it in the air at various speeds, for at least a minute and 18 seconds before bringing it back to ground for landing.” Challenge Outcome: After an hour and a half worth of attempts on the beaches of Punta Cana, Pokam lifted the kite in 13 knots winds, and kept it airborne for nearly 3 minutes.

Question

How was the 2nd Stone (POWER) earned?

Answer

The POWER Stone (August 2018: Chicago, IL) Description: “The Power Stone allows the user to access and manipulate all forms of energy; enhance their physical strength and durability. To earn it, you must complete three cycles of the ‘Spartacus Workout’ in 45 minutes or less, using two 10 lbs. dumbbells.” Challenge Outcome: Pokam fought through 3 cycles of the total body exercises in Chi-Town’s W hotel gym to complete the challenge in 43 minutes.

Question

How was the 3rd Stone (TIME) earned?

Answer

The TIME Stone (October 2018: Cincinnati, OH) Description: "The Time Stone allows the user to see into the past and the future, and travel through time. To earn it, you must accurately recreate your first date with Doug in Cincinnati. The rendition should include precise attire, dining location, meal, and conversation, among other features of that day.” Outcome: Pokam coordinated the first date and guided every detail of our first dinner at #Taste of Belgium in Cincinnati (Over the Rhine). Pokam and Doug had to act “brand new”, as if they didn't know each other and recreate conversations from years past for nearly 2 hours. After jumping back from the past to the present, we wrote messages to each one on green envelopes and placed them in a time capsule to revisit over the next 5 years. The Time Stone was earned."

Question

How was the 4th Stone (REALITY) earned?

Answer

The REALITY Stone (October 2018: Kansas City, MO) Description: Challenge Card: “The Reality Stone allows the user to create any type of alternate reality the user wishes. To earn it, you must successfully complete a trio of horror-themed experiences in virtual reality using the ‘Oculus Go’ headset.” Outcome: Pokam has 3 phobias: snakes, clowns, and ravens (she’s a Cincinnati Bengals fan : ). This challenge conveniently fell the weekend of Halloween and after 35 minutes of terror in Oculus Go’s “Face your Fears” and “IT”, the Reality Stone was earned (though virtual Pennywise made her fall out of her seat a few times)."

Question

How was the 5th Stone (MIND) earned?

Answer

The MIND Stone (November 2018: Cincinnati, OH) Challenge Card: “The Mind Stone allows the user to enhance their mental and psionic abilities. To earn it, you must defeat Doug in “Words With Friends” in 2 consecutive games. Outcome: This stone took the longest to obtain as Pokam took a few heavy L’s at the start, losing consecutive games on a few occasions. But after a month, she mixed that med school vocabulary with more selective letter placement on the game board to maximize her points and finally best Doug in consecutive games after 9 attempts. Mind over matter, as they say.

Question

How was 6th Stone (SOUL) earned?

Answer

The SOUL Stone (December 2018: Kansas City, MO) Challenge Card: “The Soul Stone grants the user control over all life in the universe. To earn it, you must write a limerick poem about your favorite story in the Bible, or about the Biblical character who has had the most profound effect on you. Outcome: The Soul Stone represents a companionship that is faith-based. Instead of writing just 1 Limerick poem, Pokam wrote 4 to earn the Soul Stone. (Note: All 4 limerick poems can be seen in the "Photos" section of this site) After reciting the 4 limerick poems, Pokam was presented a box with custom handmade jewelry made by local Kansas City artist (Rissa's Artistic Designs). The necklace and earrings set contained a replica of all 6 stones. Pokam accepted the reward and the Infinity Challenge is seemingly over…

Question

What Happened Next...

Answer

…With Pokam believing the Challenge had ended, she follows Doug to a pre-planned evening outing with friends and family. Doug guides her through the park at Kansas City's Plaza and, at a bench and lamppost, presents to her an unexpected 7th white Infinity Card. The card formally congratulates her for successfully completing the challenge and instructs her to extend her Infinity Gauntlet, snap her fingers, and close her eyes to await the seminal event… Upon opening her eyes, Pokam is presented with THE final Infinity Stone: an engagement ring. She accepts Doug's last Challenge Question –”Will you marry me?”– with a heartfelt "Yes", and the two begin the bond that will last for infinity.
