Ecuador is located in northwestern South America, bordered by Colombia on the north, Peru on the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Ecuador also includes the Galápagos Islands (about 600 mi west of the mainland). The capital city is Quito (a 6.5 hour flight from NYC. Quito is situated in the Andes Mountains and the city is nearly 10,000 feet (!) above sea level, making it the second-highest capital city in the world, as well as the one which is closest to the equator (#latitudezerowedding). For first time visitors, Ecuador does NOT require a visa (for US passport holders), the local currency is US dollars and it is in the same time zone as New York City.
