How They Met

It all began at a high school party...

Zain and Peter just happened to run into each other at a high school party one Saturday night. Zain had never seen him before, but Peter clearly took a liking to her. They started talking and hit it off. Zain noticed he was wearing their high school team’s rugby jacket, so she asked him what year he was in. Peter, trying to impress her, told her he was a senior. They shared a kiss that night, but it wasn’t until that following Monday when Zain found out from friends that Peter was in fact a newbie to the school, and a freshman! Of course, she forgave him! Peter and Zain’s relationship for most of high school consisted of being “just friends”, but little did they know what the future had in store for them. In her senior year, she was his date to his junior prom, and after Zain left high school for college, they occasionally kept in touch. Fast forward 5 years to March of 2011... Zain was living in New York and going through a difficult time. One night she noticed she had a message from Peter on Facebook. “Hey! I hope you’re doing well...” Zain knew Peter, an Army Ranger, was on deployment in Afghanistan. They started to message back and forth. Those messages turned into phone calls, which were frequently dropped mainly due to distance. But two months later, Peter was returning home from Afghanistan! They planned to see each other for the first time back home in Indiana where it all started. All it took was one night, and they quickly fell hard for one another. The rest was still unwritten...

The Proposal

“Hey babe, can you come check these kabobs?”

Yep! Peter proposed to Zain with a platter of freshly grilled kabob - the ultimate way to her Afghan heart! Nestled on this platter of kabob was a black velvet box, and inside, finally a ring! As he got down on one knee to ask her to be his forever, she stood there in disbelief. “Is this finally happening?” At least 15 long seconds had gone by and the poor guy was still patiently waiting for an answer. Then all of the sudden, Mrs. Wahab jumped from her seat at the dinner table and wrapped her arms around Peter’s neck screaming, “YES! YES!” The entire Wahab clan, all gathered for Mr. Wahab’s birthday dinner, died of laughter. After shooing her mom away, Zain wiped away her tears, wrapped her arms around her future hubby and said YES!
