The beginning

September 2019

Our first date was Will's second day in DC. He invited Jess to the bustling H-Street Festival. It ended up being over 95 degrees that day in late September and she had previous plans to meet friends afterwards, but they made it work. There were some particularly great teen rappers, Zoey and Geonna, tons of people-watching and time to exchange stories of delicious food, military life and Jess' recent trip to Europe. She also gave him a crash course on fun in DC. Later, Will texted to check in and Jess is still giving him a hard time about "friend-zoning" her. Needless to say, they went on a second date at the Georgetown Waterfront and talked for hours then headed to Nick's (a lovable but ridiculous country dance place) the next day. His first impression of her: Wow, it's hot outside...why did I wear pants today? I liked that she was so genuine and filled with joy by so many things and people. I definitely did not friend-zone her. Her first impression of him: Still impressed by the fun date idea. Goodness, he's tall. He's cuter than I thought he'd be. I had a nice time and hopefully he'll ask me out again. Within two months, Will had survived meeting Jess' parents, hiked Old Rag, driven her around in his truck, visited the basement apartment and joined the church/small group. Jess survived a grilling by Dan Louzeiro over whiskey sours at Old Ebbitt Grill, she ran a marathon (and looked good doing it), she joined Will on his second-ever concert and hand-delivered beignets to Will from a New Orleans work trip. Friends visiting from Will's last command asked him why he seemed so happy and the truth was that he knew he was going to ask Jessica to marry him. Pre-Rona, Will and Jess liked trying lots of restaurants, outings and visiting friends and family, volunteering with church and going to museum events. Post-Rona, Will and Jess enjoy watching Jeopardy and the Great British Baking Show, cooking pancakes too frequently, visiting rooftops and long walks.
