We have been vacationing in Maine since we started dating. Our first trip together was to Maine. Since then we have visited Maine countless times with our family and with our friends. Over time, Maine unintentionally became our all season destination to adventure, connect, and restore. When Amanda proposed to Mel in Maine on December 10th, there was no question where we would elope. We want to channel that same warm and adventurous energy as our previous trips to Maine during our celebration with y'all.
October 15th is a very special date for Mel’s family. Mel’s maternal grandparents, Helen and Norman, got married on that date in 1949, and her parents, Mike and Christine, did the same in 1988. This year Mel’s parents will be celebrating their 34th wedding anniversary! It is really important to us to honor Mel’s grandparents and parents in this significant way.
On June 26th, 2015, Obergefell overturned Baker and the sumpreme court ruled for all states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and to recognize same-sex marriages in all 50 states. Prior to this ruling, gay marraige was only legal in 36 states. We recognize those inspiring LGBTQIA+ folks that paved the way for us to be able to celebrate this way. We also acknowlege our privilege - there are still many LGBTQIA folks, especially BIPOC and trans folks that are working towards more than marraige equality. We are very grateful for all the love, support, family, and chosen family that surrounds us.
