● What do I need to go between both sides of the island? a. Nothing! There is no border control or tolls. You can simply drive between both sides! ● What languages do they speak? a. On the Dutch Side, English is spoken most commonly. On the French side, French is spoken most commonly, but most people can speak English as well. ● What is the currency of both sides of SXM? a. The official currency of the French side is the Euro. The official currency of the Dutch side is the Guilder. Both accept US dollars. I use dollars on the Dutch side. On the French side, ask if the establishment does “$1=€ 1”. If they do, paying in dollars will usually be cheaper (dependent on the current exchange rate). ● Should I use a credit card or cash? a. Bring cash. There are establishments that will NOT accept credit cards. b. Tip: Call your credit card companies before you travel, so they don’t lock your credit cards.

● What are some “must-have” travel items? a. Cash is important! Not all establishments accept credit cards. b. Sunscreen and Bug Spray (eg. “Off”) c. Snorkeling equipment. There aren’t many beaches that rent snorkeling equipment. d. Power Adapter for French Side (220 V) ● Can I drink tap water? a. The usual answer is yes. Be safe, ask the reception at your hotel! ● What is the driving like? a. Single-lane roads. SXM drivers are pushy. Please be cautious. Trust me, they will surprise you. b. There is traffic. Stand-still traffic for hours, especially in Simpson Bay/Cole Bay between 3-6 pm. I have seen people leave cars, walk into a bar and carry drinks to the car to make the wait more enjoyable.
