Origin Story

#HowWeMet

Since 2010 Olu and Maria have known each other for several years through mutual friends and church family. In 2013, while Maria was attending school in NJ, she participated in a play at The Gathering Church, where she and Olu held lead acting roles. Studying lines together, they discovered a shared interest in Christian hip-hop, wrestling, and church ministry. Upon graduating that year, Maria returned to her hometown in Maryland, while Olu remained in NJ. They continued to stay in contact but hadn’t pursued a relationship at the time. From that point on, Olu and Maria often had spur in the moment discussions on scriptures that helped establish an ongoing friendship. They valued each other’s goals and interests by supporting significant milestones such as Olu’s thesis film debut and Maria’s 25th birthday celebration. On January 15, 2017 Olu asked Maria if she’d like to hang out for the day. Maria was curious, yet excited to join him for a day of fun. They went camel back riding at the Travel and Adventure show in DC and then attended an open mic night where they spontaneously sang an original song in front of a crowd. They strolled through the streets of Georgetown as they reflected on their adventurous day. What originally intended to be a hangout turned out to be their “first date”. Olu took a leap of faith and told Maria that he was attracted to her and interested in getting to know her more. He asked if she would go on this journey with him. Maria smiled in agreement and said, “I don’t just like you Olu, but I like you, like you.” [Thank you Hey Arnold! Lol.] Olu and Maria’s romantic relationship blossomed from that day forward.

The Proposal

#SheSaidYes

On the morning of January 18, 2020 Olu put the finishing touches on an artistically crafted journal filled with thoughts of love for Maria. For weeks Olu prepared for this special day—the moment he would propose to his lovely lady. Boy was he nervous. Meanwhile, Maria just finished a busy week at work & looked forward to celebrating their 3-year dating anniversary. This weekend she contemplated everything, her hair, clothing, and perfume. She had no clue this would be the day he would propose. Filled with joy they headed to their first stop, Georgetown Cupcake, a memorable spot they frequented. While enjoying treats, Olu shared an excerpt from the journal. Maria’s eyes lit up as he shared his thoughts of affection for her. Then they journeyed through the streets of Georgetown where it all began 3 years ago. This time, Olu said something he wanted to say for a long time—“I love you Maria.” Her heart fluttered as she responded, “I love you too Olu.” That was the icing on the cake, but she didn’t expect what was coming. Their final stop was The Kennedy Center in DC. They entered the building & strolled down a brightly lit foyer adorned with chandeliers & works of art. To her surprise, Maria noticed her family standing in the foyer & curiously inquired as to why they were there. Olu took Maria’s hands & they locked eyes. He said to her: “Three years ago from 3 days ago I asked if you would join me on this journey as we get to know one another. You said yes, in the words of I don’t just like you, “I like you, like you.” And it’s been a wonderful journey with a kind & compassionate woman. I’ve said a lot of things today, and now there is only one thing left to say.” Olu got on one knee & popped the big question, “Maria Melody Spriggs, will you marry me?” As live music played, Maria broke down in excitement & said the 3-letter word “YES!” Family and friends shouted for joy as Olu placed the ring on Maria’s finger. They embraced one another & kissed for the first time.
