What was once the most dangerous area/city in the entire world, is now transformed into one of the most popular tourist spots in Medellin. Here you will walk the busy streets with food and clothing vendors, dancers, and beautiful street art. Side Story: Comuna 13 is a special place to us. When we were visiting Medellin a year ago, we met two puppies who stole our hearts; Chanel and Benito. At first, we decided to only bring home Benito because the thought of having two puppies at the same time would be a lot to handle. It was a hard decision, but we wanted a male frenchie (sorry Chanel, we still love you). Later on our trip, a family friend/the dog breeder, Wilson, met up with us to give us a tour of Comuna 13. Wilson brought Chanel with him since no one was able to watch her while he was gone. When we saw Chanel for the second time, we decided we could not leave her behind. During our tour of Comuna 13 we decided we would also take Chanel home with us.
Another popular tourist spot where people all over the world come to climb 649 steps to the top of a giant rock. The views from the top are amazing and worth the climb! It is about 1.5 hour drive from Medellin. We recommend you take the traveling bus, DiDi service car, or a tour group to take you there. We strongly advise not renting a car during your visit.
If you are visiting El Peñol, Guatape has a public plaza with cafes and crafts shops with brightly painted structures. Here you will find "Plazoleta de Los Zócalos," AKA the street of colorful umbrellas. You can walk around visiting the shops, restaurants, and taking pictures. Be sure to stop and get a fresh hot cinnamon roll at one of the local vendor stands under the umbrellas.
