The Friendship Picture this, South Shore K-8 August 2012. Nikita, 1st grade student teacher. Kenneth, 4th grade teacher. In Kenneth’s quest to find friends his age, he asked Nikita to grab coffee with him. Over the course of months, our friendship grew; we hiked, we laughed, we played board games, and jammed out during red home concerts. Quest completed: friendship obtained. The Relationship Some odd years later, while puzzling we realized we were spending a lot of time together, binge watching New Girl on Netflix and whatever else the youths did back then. In moments of reflection (like great teachers do), we realized we had developed feelings for each other. So, we made it official and started dating. We moved in together. Kenneth learned how to fold laundry the “Nikita” way. He also became a grill master, learning the secret art to grilling steak. Nikita learned to love avocados and “real” tacos. Our relationship grew the most during our 2019 road trip to 12 National Parks. We had freezing nights, hot humid nights, starry nights, and poor planning decisions. We learned that Bison are not our friends, eating in the tent is not allowed, and elevation gain and dehydration can cause a massive headache. But through it all, we kept loving each other. The Proposal In September of 2019, Kenneth started planning one of the biggest moments of our lives together: The Proposal. With the help of MOPOP (a museum), Kenneth created a fake teacher event that we were to attend on December 28th, 2019. On that day, we watched the Pixar movie UP (our proposal theme is based off this movie). As we checked into the “event”, we were escorted to the Sky Church and seated in front of a giant screen. The lights dimmed, and the premade video Kenneth made started playing on the screen, recapping our relationship. When the video was over, Kenneth got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes, and then we met my family at a nearby pizza spot.
