Drive 30 minutes inland to reach Montecristi, home of the Panama hat. The name comes from then-US president Teddy Roosevelt, who returned to the US with a straw hat after seeing them worn by Ecuadorians who were building the Panama Canal. The small town that made them then now trades off its fame, selling the iconic hats everywhere along with many other souvenirs.
From Puerto Lopez, whale watching tours are organized where you go out in boats finding and admiring the whales from up close for about two hours. This is slightly under 2 hours south of Manta. There are buses to take you from Manta to Puerto Lopez. You may also rent a car.
